How to find the right textbook

  1. Start with the reading list

Your course page usually has an up-to-date list. Note the ISBN for each book, the 13-digit number pointing at exactly one edition. More on ISBNs further down.

  2. Search the ISBN, not the title

A title search mixes every edition together. An ISBN points at one specific edition and removes the doubt immediately.

  3. Choose a seller, not just a book

The same book is often listed by several people. Look for a seller who has more than one book from your list. One shipment from one seller almost always beats four cheap books from four different sellers.

  4. Browse the rest of their shelf

Once you have found a book with a seller, see what else they have. Buy three books or more from the same seller and shipping is free, and it all arrives in one parcel.

What is an ISBN?

A 13-digit number pointing at one specific edition. Your reading list usually gives it, in brackets after the title.

Older books have ten digits. Works just as well, with or without hyphens:

9780553507843
978-0-553-50784-3
0553507842
0-553-50784-2
