    Unstrange Minds

    Roy Richard Grinker

When anthropologist Richard Grinker's daughter was diagnosed with autism in 1994, it occurred in only about 1 in every 10,000 children. Within ten years, rates had skyrocketed, and the media was declaring autism an epidemic. Unstrange Minds documents Grinker's quest across the globe to discover the surprising truth about why autism is so much more common today. Grinker shows that the identification and treatment of autism depends on culture just as much as on science. Filled with moving stories and informed by the latest science, Unstrange Minds is a powerful testament to a father's quest for the truth.

    Perspectives on Africa

Perspectives on Africa: A reader in culture, history & representation

    Roy Richard, Christopher B.

Perspectives on Africa brings key works in African studies to a wide range of readers. Forty-four articles have been selected either because they have proved to be classic and influential, or because of their significance to the current development of the field. Review "Here is an excellent anthology that illustrates magnificently processes of Africa's invention, the complexity of her cultures, the paradoxes and predicament of discourses that claim to render her being." V. Y. Mudimbe Stanford University. "A volume for all students and teachers seriously interested in understanding the unity and diversity of African cultures, and engaging in a dialogue with African Studies literary ancestors and their creative and critical successors. Grinker and Steiner have offered a doorway for those who dare to embrace the masters of the field and join new academic worlds in the making." Sulayman S. Nyang, Professor, Howard University and Director of the African Voices Project, Smithsonian Institute. "Perspectives on Africa is a much needed addition to African studies and literature. They attempt, quite successfully, to place each article within, not only an historical time frame, but also within a theoretical progression. Its bibliographies contain a useful starting point and reference on all the major trends and subjects." Sean Pratt, Department of Social Anthropology, University of Cambridge. From the Back Cover Perspectives on Africa brings key works in African studies to a wide range of readers. Forty-four articles have been selected either because they have proved to be classic and influential, or because of their significance to the current development of the field. The book's combined focus on ethnography and theory gives the student the means to link theory with data, and perspective with practice. The book is at once an introduction to the cultures of Africa, and a history of how those cultures have been perceived and interpreted. After a general introduction to contemporary issues in African studies, the volume is organized into ten parts, each introduced by the editors and organized around major debates and central issues. The articles illustrate the dynamic processes by and through which scholars have described and understood African history and culture, and show how profoundly the ethnography of Africa has influenced the direction and development of anthropological and social theory. The authors include anthropologists, historians, philosophers and critics. Collectively they show the multiplicities of voice in African studies, and reveal the interpenetration of ideas and concepts within and across disciplines, regions and historical periods. The book is illustrated with maps and photographs, and includes guides to further reading on all main issues and subjects. It will be welcomed by all students of African history and culture. About the Author Roy Richard Grinker is Associate Professor of Anthropology and International Affairs at the George Washington University and Senior Fellow at the Atlantic Council of the United States in Washington, DC. He has written widely on Zaire and Korea and is the author of Houses in the Rainforest: Ethnicity and Inequality among Farmers and Foragers in Central Africa (1994). Christopher B. Steiner is Associate Professor of Art History and Director of Museum Studies at Connecticut College. He is the author of African Art in Transit (1994), which was awarded the 1993-94 Amaury Talbot Prize for African Anthropology and co-editor (with Ruth B Phillips) of Unpacking Culture: Art and Commodity in Colonial and Postcolonial Worlds (1998). He has taught anthropology and art history at Harvard University, UCLA, University of Southern California and the University of East Anglia.

Advocacy Practice for Social Justice, Third Edition

Advocacy Practice for Social Justice, Third Edition

University of Texas at Arlington) Hoefer Richard (Roy E. Dulak Professor for Community Practice Research in the School of Social Work

Current economic and social forces are creating a society with less equality, justice and opportunity for all but the privileged few. Social workers are called upon by their code of ethics to counteract these trends and actively work to achieve social justice. Hoefer's empirically-based, step-by-step approach demonstrates how to integrate advocacy for social justice into everyday social work practice. The book shows through anecdotes, case studies, examples, and theauthor's own personal experiences, exactly how advocacy can be conducted with successful outcomes. Each chapter builds upon the previous to provide a concise yet detailed blueprint for conducting successful advocacy. The previous two editions of this book have been used and admired by professors and students alike. Students value its clarity and praise the book for opening their eyes to what they often believed was "the scary and bad" world of politics and policy. After reading the book, they are motivated to become advocates for social justice because they understand how to do so. If you want to empower your students to effect changes in laws, regulations, and other types of policy at all levels, you willfind this text the perfect resource to do so.

    Pop art

    Pop art

"Everything is beautiful," raved Andy Warhol, in raptures at the glamour of modern life, consumer society, and the world of the media and its stars; his proclamation can be considered the maxim of the pop generation, which included artists Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenberg, Robert Rauschenberg, James Rosenquist, Tom Wesselmann, and Richard Hamilton, among others. The pop artists of the 1960s had a profound effect on the cloth of art history and their influence can be clearly seen in art today. Here, Tilman Osterwald explores the styles, themes, and sources of pop art around the world.

    The Upshaws of County Line

    The Upshaws of County Line

    Richard Orton

Guss, Felix, and Jim Upshaw founded the community of County Line in the 1870s in northwest Nacogdoches County, in deep East Texas. As with hundreds of other relatively autonomous black communities created at that time, the Upshaws sought a safe place to raise their children and create a livelihood during Reconstruction and Jim Crow Texas. In the late 1980s photographer Richard Orton visited County Line for the first time and became aware of a world he did not know existed as a white man. He went down the rabbit hole, so to speak, and met some remarkable people there who changed his life. The more than 50 duotone photographs and text convey the contemporary experience of growing up in a ""freedom colony."" Covering a period of twenty-five years, photographer Richard Orton juxtaposes his images with text from people who grew up in and have remained connected to their birthplace. Thad Sitton's foreword sets the community in historical context and Roy Flukinger points out the beauty of the documentary photographs. This book should appeal to anyone interested in American or Texas history, particularly the history of African Americans in the South in the aftermath of the Civil War. The book should also be of interest to anyone with an appreciation for documentary photography, including students and teachers of photography.

    Industry and the Coast

    Industry and the Coast

    Richard Gaunt

In the 1960s, many of the heavy industries in the North East of England were still busy, but facing fundamental change as better technology and foreign competition swept towards them. There is thus a singular beauty and poignancy to the shipyard cranes on the Tyne and the Wear, the towering blast furnaces, the chemical works on Teeside, infrastructure for coal shipping from Seaham Harbour and Sunderland, and home-made houseboats resting in the mud...In an era when pollution was less of a concern, dusty furnaces, smoking chimneys, and untreated waste went straight into the North Sea. Yet not too far away were glorious beaches and unspoiled countryside, and billboards advertising Roy Orbison's tour visit! People, too, were caught up in this poignant moment of transition: young lads looking for something to do; old men watching it all go by; workers busy at the docks. Industry & The Coast is a gritty, 'warts-and-all' depiction of areas with a unique story to tell, immortalised in haunting, previously unpublished images, and a captivating narrative in which the author draws from the abandoned emblems of our industrial history a deeper human significance and sense of place.

Field Guide to the Ladybirds of Great Britain and Ireland

Field Guide to the Ladybirds of Great Britain and Ireland

    Helen Roy, Peter Brown

"A ground-breaking identification guide ... the perfect marriage of artistic excellence, deep knowledge and, dare I say it, of scientists' genuine affection." BRETT WESTWOODThis brand new illustrated field guide covers all 47 species of ladybird occurring in the British Isles in a handy and easy-to-use format. Twenty-seven species are colourful and conspicuous and easily recognised as ladybirds; the remaining species are more challenging, but the clear illustrations and up-to-date text in this guide will help to break down the identification barriers. A useful introduction provides an overview of ladybird ecology, tips on studying and recording, and suggested sites for finding ladybirds. The main part of the book comprises detailed species texts, covering field characters, food, habitats, suggested survey methods, ranges, conservation statuses and distribution trends. An illustrated at-a-glance identification guide and helpful pointers for differentiating similar-looking species are also included. With 102 colour photographs and 47 distribution maps, combined with Richard Lewington's peerless artwork, this is the definitive guide to one of our most cherished and charismatic insect groups.

    Greece Through Irish Eyes

    Greece Through Irish Eyes

    Richard Pine

Greece through Irish Eyes is an insightful personal view by Richard Pine of the country where he has lived for the past 15 years. One of Ireland's leading literary critics, Pine asks, What links Ireland and Greece? The author's trenchant, provocative arguments acknowledge both the strengths and the weaknesses of Greece today, and draw suggestive parallels with the Irish situation. In particular, Greece through Irish Eyes examines the shared history of Ireland and Greece * in wars of independence and civil wars * in the pandemic of clientelism * in the Church/State nexus * in the power of political dynasties * in economic crises. Pine pays special attention to the family values of honour, loyalty, and economy, arguing that these are at the heart of Greek society and culture. He develops this in a comprehensive survey of Greek law, literature and politics, and Greece's position at the centre of Balkan affairs. He graphically describes the effects of austerity on society and the economy, with up-to-the-minute accounts of the new government's attempts to renegotiate Greece's bailout. He strongly criticises the intransigence of bureaucracy, the pervasiveness of bribery and corruption and the continuing threats of terrorism and fascism.Richard Pine also calls for a major rethink on Greek and Irish positions on Europe. The parallels between Ireland and Greece may make some readers uncomfortable, but they are substantiated by solid examples of cultural, economic and historical differences which argue against integration into a centre-dominated Europe. "Greece is a country I both love and mourn. Richard Pine writes about it with a unique and painful empathy" - Roy Foster

Thorvald Steen, Hans Jacob Orning, Tonje Vold, Roy Jacobsen

Hvordan forstå historien - både i verden og i sitt eget liv?

Raising Up a Faithful Exegete : Essays in Honor of Richard D. Nelson

Raising Up a Faithful Exegete : Essays in Honor of Richard D. Nelson

    K. L. Noll

<p>Twenty-three colleagues, friends, and former students of Richard Nelson honor him by contributing essays to this volume. Nelson is the fromer Kraft Professor of Biblical Studies at Lutheran Theological Seminary in Gettysburg, PA, and current W. J. A. Power Professor of Biblical Hebrew and Old Testament Interpretation as well as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University, Dallas. He is the author of numerous books, commentaries, and articles. <i>Raising Up a Faithful Exegete</i> centers around topics of particular interest to Prof. Nelson, especially Deuteronomy, the Former Prophets, priesthoods, social interactions, and theology. In fact, this book could be seen as a one-volume summation of current thinking on Deuteronomy, the Former Prophets, Deuteronomism, and Biblical Theology, disguised as a Festschrift.</p><p><p>"For eleven years, I had the distinct pleasure and honor of having Richard Nelson as a senior faculty colleague. He has served as a fine model of what it means to be a dynamic and innovative teacher, an insightful mentor, a world-class scholar, a supportive friend, a dedicated leader in the church, and a person who takes sheer delight in all facets of his calling."-Richard P. Carlson, Lutheran Theological Seminary, Gettysburg, PA</p><p><p>"Rich Nelson is a truly rare breed of man. He is not only a passionate and respected scholar, thoroughly trained and representative of historical-critical approaches to the Hebrew Bible. But he is also open and interested in the whole spectrum of different ways in which the Bible is read and understood both in the church and the academy. He is a remarkable role-model."-Roy L. Heller, Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University, Dallas</p><p><p>"Rich Nelson was one of the best graduate students I ever taught. In a seemingly effortless manner, he did basic, significant research that provided the grounds for a major but to that point generally undeveloped reading of the Deuteronomistic History. Out of that early study and his later scholarly work, he has rightly become one of our leading interpreters of Deuteronomy and the history that evolved out of its circle."-Patrick D. Miller, Jr., Princeton Theological Seminary</p>
