Svalbard

The Politics of Provisions
The elemental power of food politics has not been fully appraised. Food marketing and consumption were matters of politics as much as economics as England became a market society. In times of dearth, concatenations of food riots, repression, and relief created a maturing politics of provisions. Over three centuries, some eight hundred riots crackled in waves across England. Crowds seized wagons, attacked mills and granaries, and lowered prices in marketplaces or farmyards. Sometimes rioters parleyed with magistrates. More often both acted out a well-rehearsed political minuet that evolved from Tudor risings and state policies down to a complex culmination during the Napoleonic Wars. 'Provision politics' thus comprised both customary negotiations over scarcity and hunger, and 'negotiations' of the social vessel through the turbulence of dearth. Occasionally troops killed rioters, or judges condemned them to the gallows, but increasingly riots prompted wealthy citizens to procure relief supplies. In short, food riots worked: in a sense they were a first draft of the welfare state. This pioneering analysis connects a generation of social protest studies spawned by E.P. Thompson's essay on the 'moral economy' with new work on economic history and state formation. The dynamics of provision politics that emerged during England's social, economic and political transformations should furnish fruitful models for analyses of 'total war' and famine as well as broader transitions elsewhere in world history.

Paraverbal Communication With Children
For over twenty years I have been privileged to observe, partic- ipate in, and contribute to the development of the ideas and techniques that culminated in this most unusual, impressive, and useful book. in words the total experience While it is difficult to convey of this innovative therapeutic approach, this volume enables the reader to become a part of these therapy sessions and to learn to "know" and appreciate these fruitful methods. The techniques described in detail in this volume are designed for use with children who are viewed as "resi- stant" and uncommunicative-a fairly large percentage of youth who have not responded to traditional therapy. The approach is based on many practical assumptions. Among them are the idea that rhythm, of whatever nature, cannot be "shut out"; that one can have pleasure in producing c- v vi FOREWORD munication (fun of all things); and that pleasure and accep- tance lead to the integration of motility, emotions, and ideation. These all lead to increased self-esteem and compe- tence. The selection of the modality is completely individu- alized and leads to a therapy with the child-not to or at the child. To complete the circle, the method is eminently teachable. Thus, both students in training and practicing therapists who are concerned with promoting growth and development in the children they treat will find this guide exceptionally use- ful and stimulating. Lahav I. Pottery and Politics : The Halif Terrace Site 101 and Egypt in the Fourth Millennium B.C.E
<p>This volume is the first in a planned series of reports on the investigations of the Lahav Research Project (LRP) at Tell Halif, located near Kibbutz Lahav in southern Israel. The LRP has focused widely on stratigraphic, environmental, and ethnographic problems related to the history of settlement at Tell Halif and in its immediate surroundings, from prehistoric through modern times. It is fitting that this LRP series begins by focusing on remains from Site 101, which was the first location excavated by the team in 1973. This initial effort involved investigation of a warren of shallow caves that had been exposed by efforts to widen the road into the kibbutz.</p><p>In this volume, J. P. Dessel reports on the excavation undertaken at Site 101 during Phase II and is also supplemented by his later research. The excavation itself was guided throughout by Dessel's determination to require the total retrieval of all ceramic remains. It was his rigorous follow-through on all details involved in the analysis of materials that produced the pioneering results herein presented. Readers will find the book important for the archaeology and history of the southern Levant in the 4th millennium B.C.E. as well as for connections between the Levant and surrounding regions in that era.</p>

Recent Advances in Nemertean Biology
The nemerteans are a fascinating, common and often locally abundant group of invertebrates, yet for long have attracted the attention of only a handful of scientists. In recent years, however, increasing numbers of people have developed diverse research interests in the group with the result that our knowledge of these worms has rapidly advanced. Clearly there is a need for a regular series of international meetings where individuals working on these animals can meet to exchange ideas, review developments concerning nemertean biology and freely discuss future proposals. The first such meeting was held in Philadelphia during December 1983. Twenty-seven scientists from eight countries participated in the Second International Meeting on Nemertean Biology, held at the Tjarno Marine Biological Laboratory, Sweden, 11-15 August 1986. The meeting was divid- ed into five sessions: two dealt with ecological studies, two with nemertean taxonomy, and the final session covered aspects of general biology. A total of 26 papers was presented; four, by N. Anadem, G. Berg, 1. Bierne, and 1.M. TurbeviIIe, were for different reasons not submitted for inclusion in this volume.Three additional presentations were made on behalf of B. Kulikova, E. N. WiIImer, and Z. Yin, all of whom were unable to participate in the meeting.

Urban Sociology
Urbanization happens as result of p increasing population and crowding in a given region or a city. It is also associated with the fact that there is increasing movement of people from the rural areas to the urban set up like towns and cities in general. The onset of urbanization began a long time ago when people started moving or migrating from the rural areas to the cities with the belief that they could be exposed to a better life than that in the rural areas. In modern times urbanization is closely linked to modernization, industrialization, and the sociological process of rationalization. Urbanization can describe a specific condition at a set time, i.e. the proportion of total population or area in cities or towns, or the term can describe the increase of this proportion over time. With the growth in urbanization came the urban communities. These are communities of people who live in these urban centres. As part of your study of urban sociology, this book provides an elaborate account of the urban communities to help with a view to provide a deeper understanding of these communities. The book provides a detailed overview of all the aspects of the urban community. It starts by discussing the concept of urban communities, Such as the characteristics of urban communities, the positive aspects of urban communities and the negative aspects of urban communities. The book then delves into the issue of identities, differences and territories as they pertain to urban communities. Here it introduces the four dominant processes and subsequent trends in urban pollution growth and urban communities. It also tackles the issues of language differences as instrument in the urban community, segregation and differences in territories of urban community and income segregation in urban communities. To better understand urban communities the book takes a look at the lifestyle and consumption habits of urban communities. In this section the book covers urban lifestyle, shopping behavior of the urban communities, food consumption patterns of the urban communities, alcohol consumption and the urban communities and impact of the millennial preference on the urban lifestyle. In the chapter on culture of the urban communities the book explores the concept of urban culture, the factors that influence the urban culture, types of ancient urban cultures and modern urban cultures. because just like any other community, urban communities relies heavily on social links and networks, this book discusses important issues to do with social networks of the urban communities such as key factors that shape social networks of the urban communities, social networks and social support among urban communities, social networks and new technologies in the urban communities and community social network as tool for urban development.Civil society organizations play an important role in the society and especially the urban community. to better understand the role of civil society organizations in urban community this books provides a theoretical framework of social movement and then discusses the meaning of civil society, the role of civil society, the measurements of the civil society sector, the obstructions to growth of civil society in developing countries, the state versus civil society and the challenges ahead for civil movements. The book also looks at the pertinent issue of gender equality and streamlining in urban centers. Here the book discusses the gender roles in urban communities, and the gender and urban social movement.Housing is one of the major problems that members of urban communities have to grapple with every year. As an urban sociology student it is important that you have a clear understanding of this issue. This provides you with a detailed over view of urbanization and housing menace and provide important case studies on the future of housing in urban centers. The book also has a chapter dedicated to poverty and the urban communities. Poverty in urban centers is high everywhere on earth. From this book you will learn about the historical development of urban poverty, the main poverty factors, the morphology of poverty in modern cities and the urban poverty cases around the world.Crime is also another social evil most associated with the urban community. In this book you will study about the causes of crime in the urban communities, the types of urban crimes, reasons why people commit crimes in the urban areas and how to control and prevent crime in the urban communities. Migration for years has been an important source of the urban community. This book discuss the historical over view of migration of human beings, reasons for rural urban migration, internal migration, rural-rural migration, rural-urban migration, return migration, migration selectivity, general regulations relating to migration and benefits of migrationFinally this book looks at the future of urban communities. In this section the book covers indicators of a better life ahead in the urban and the urban communities, improving the quality of life in the urban set up, planning for long-term growth and renewal and specific causes for migration with an aim of determining the future of urban communities. This book therefore is perfect for urban sociology students as it covers all the important aspects of urban community that the students' needs to know.

Advanced information systems engineering : 13th international conference, CAiSE 2001, Interlaken, Switzerland, June 4-8, 2001 : proceedings
Since the late 1980s, the CAiSE conferences have provided a forum for the p- sentation and exchange of research results and practical experiences within the ?eld of Information Systems Engineering. CAiSE 2001 was the 13th conference in this series and was held from 4th to 8th June 2001 in the resort of Int- laken located near the three famous Swiss mountains - the Eiger, M onch, and Jungfrau. The ?rst two days consisted of pre-conference workshops and tutorials. The workshop themes included requirements engineering, evaluation of modeling methods, data integration over the Web, agent-oriented information systems, and the design and management of data warehouses. Continuing the tradition of recent CAiSE conferences, there was also a doctoral consortium. The p- conference tutorials were on the themes of e-business models and XML appli- tion development. The main conference program included three invited speakers, two tuto- als, and a panel discussion in addition to presentations of the papers in these proceedings. We also included a special 'practice and experience' session to give presentersanopportunitytoreportonanddiscussexperiencesandinvestigations on the use of methods and technologies in practice. Weextendourthankstothemembersoftheprogramcommitteeandallother referees without whom such conferences would not be possible. The program committee, whose members came from 20 di?erent countries, selected 27 hi- quality research papers and 3 experience reports from a total of 97 submissions. The topics of these papers span the wide-range of topics relevant to information systems engineering - from requirements and design through to implementation and operation of complex and dynamic systems.

Algorithm engineering : 4th international workshop, WAE 2000, Saarbrücken, Germany, September 5-8, 2000 : proceedings
This volume contains the papers accepted for the 4th Workshop on Algorithm Engineering (WAE 2000) held in Saarbruc ken, Germany, during 5-8 September 2000, together with the abstract of the invited lecture given by Karsten Weihe. The Workshop on Algorithm Engineering covers research on all aspects of the subject. The goal is to present recent research results and to identify and explore directions for future research. Previous meetings were held in Venice (1997), Saarbruc ken (1998), and London (1999). Papers were solicited describing original research in all aspects of algorithm engineering, including: - Development of software repositories and platforms which allow the use of and experimentation with e?cient discrete algorithms. - Novel uses of discrete algorithms in other disciplines and the evaluation of algorithms for realistic environments. - Methodological issues including standards in the context of empirical - search on algorithms and data structures. - Methodological issues regarding the process of converting user requirements into e?cient algorithmic solutions and implementations. The program committee accepted 16 from a total of 30 submissions. The program committee meeting was conducted electronically. The criteria for sel- tion were originality, quality, and relevance to the subject area of the workshop. Considerable e?ort was devoted to the evaluation of the submissions and to p- viding the authors with feedback. Each submission was reviewed by at least four program committee members (assisted by subreferees). A special issue of the ACM Journal of Experimental Algorithmics will be devoted to selected papers from WAE 2000.
