On the Trail of Genghis Khan: An Epic Journey Through the Land of the Nomads

On the Trail of Genghis Khan: An Epic Journey Through the Land of the Nomads

    Tim Cope

Grand Prize Winner, Banff Mountain Festival Book Competition The relationship between man and horse on the Eurasian steppe gave rise to a succession of rich nomadic cultures. Among them were the Mongols of the thirteenth century a small tribe, which, under the charismatic leadership of Genghis Khan, created the largest contiguous land empire in history. Inspired by the extraordinary life nomads lead, Tim Cope embarked on a journey that hadn't been successfully completed since those times: to travel on horseback across the entire length of the Eurasian steppe, from Karakorum, the ancient capital of Mongolia, through Kazakhstan, Russia, Crimea and the Ukraine to the Danube River in Hungary. From horse-riding novice to spending months in the saddle, he learnt to fend off wolves and would-be horse-thieves, and grapple with the haunting extremes of the steppe as he crossed sub-zero plateaux, the scorching deserts of Kazakhstan and the high-mountain passes of the Carpathians. As he travelled he formed a close bond with his horses and especially his dog Tigon, and encountered essential hospitality the linchpin of human survival on the steppe from those he met along the way. Cope bears witness to how the traditional ways hang in the balance in the post-Soviet world an era that has brought new-found freedom, but also the perils of corruption and alcoholism, and left a world bereft of both the Communist system upon which it once relied, and the traditional knowledge of the nomadic forefathers. A journey of adventure, endurance and eventual triumph, "On the Trail of Genghis Khan" is at once a celebration of and an elegy for an ancient way of life."

    Tim Cope

The relationship between man and horse on the Eurasian steppe gave rise to a succession of rich nomadic cultures. Among them were the Mongols of the thirteenth century - a small tribe, which, under the charismatic leadership of Genghis Khan, created the largest contiguous land empire in history. Inspired by the extraordinary life nomads still lead today, Tim Cope embarked on a journey that hadn't been successfully completed since those times: to travel on horseback across the entire length of the Eurasian steppe, from Karakorum, the ancient capital of Mongolia, through Kazakhstan, Russia, Crimea and the Ukraine to the Danube River in Hungary. From horse-riding novice to travelling three years and 10,000 kilometres on horseback, accompanied by his dog Tigon, Tim learnt to fend off wolves and would-be horse-thieves, and grapple with the extremes of the steppe as he crossed sub-zero plateaux, the scorching deserts of Kazakhstan and the high-mountain passes of the Carpathians. Along the way, he was taken in by people who taught him the traditional ways and told him their recent history: Stalin's push for industrialisation brought calamity to the steepe and forced collectivism that in Kazakhstan alone led to the loss of several million livestock and the starvation of more than a million nomads. Today Cope bears witness to how the traditional ways hang precariously in the balance in the post-Soviet world.

Life in a Roman Legionary Fortress

Life in a Roman Legionary Fortress

    Tim Copeland

The Roman legions were the formidable, highly organised and welldisciplined backbone of the Roman army, vital to maintaining order and control of the borders of the Empire and its subjugated peoples. The fortresses that were the bases of the legions reflected their values: purposeful, hierarchical and an intimidating display of Roman culture. But what was it like to live in one of these fortresses? What was the everyday experience of the legionary, centurion and commander? Life in a Roman Legionary Fortress provides a fascinating insight into the inner mechanisms of the castrum and the people who maintained it. Using the fortresses at Chester, York, Caerleon and across the Empire, Tim Copeland reconstructs the complex workings of these legionary camps and provides readers with the archaeological and literary evidence that gives us an insight into life behind the high walls.

    The Conservatives since 1945

    The Conservatives since 1945

University of London) Bale Tim (Professor of Politics Queen Mary

What do we really mean when we say a political party has changed? And exactly what is it that drives that change? Political scientists working in the comparative tradition have come up with a general explanation that revolves around the role of election defeats and loss of office, and around changes of leader and factions. But how well does that explanation cope when subjected to a historically-grounded and therefore robust examination? This book tries to answer thatquestion by subjecting the common wisdom to a real-world, over-time test using one of the world's oldest and most successful political parties as an in-depth case study. What do the periods spent in both opposition and government by the British Conservatives since 1945 tell us about what drivesparties to change their sales-force, the way they organize, and the policies they come up with? Using internal papers, memos and minutes of meetings from party archives, along with historical and contemporary accounts, memoirs and interviews, this book maps the extent of change and then explores what may have driven it. The conventional wisdom, it turns out, is not necessarily wrong but incomplete, requiring both qualification and supplementation. This approachably-written book suggests when, how, and why. Along the way, it provides a fresh and comprehensive account of the Conservative Party that should appeal equally to those interested in political history and those interested in political science.

New Zealand's First World War Heritage

New Zealand's First World War Heritage

    Imelda Bargas, Tim Shoebridge

Rediscover New Zealand's hidden First World War history through the places where it happened. No battles were fought here, yet the First World War intruded into the daily life of every New Zealander who remained at home. This ground-breaking book provides vivid new insights into their experiences through exploring the places where they lived, worked, coped and mourned: army camps, fortifications, soldier-settler farms, town halls, wharves, convalescent homes and hospitals, cemeteries and war memorials, dairy factories and woollen mills. From Northland to Stewart Island, our landscape is signposted with thousands of poignant memorials, and behind the facades of old buildings, beneath scrub and behind farm fences lies a less visible landscape of war and hundreds of hidden stories waiting to be told: a soldier's name carved on a remote railway station, a once bustling uniform factory in the heart of a city, a long abandoned gun battery ...This unique book will be a revelation to all New Zealanders.Extensively illustrated with new and period photographs and fascinating maps, it contains original research and information that will open the eyes of every reader to places and stories in their community hidden in plain sight. The impact of the First World War on New Zealanders was immense; its legacy can be seen all around us today.

    Jacked Up

    Jacked Up

    Erica Sage

Saved! meets Tim Federle with just a dash of A.S. King in this hilarious and poignant debut about a teen stuck at Jesus camp. It's bad enough that Nick's sister is dead, and, in some bizarre attempt to force him to confront his grief, his parents are shipping him off to Jesus camp. But he's also being followed around by Jack Kerouac, who's incredibly annoying for a genius. If arguing with a dead beat poet doesn't qualify him for antipsychotics already, Nick's pretty sure Eden Springs is going to drive him insane. The campers ride donkeys into the desert, snap selfies with counselors dressed as disciples, and replace song lyrics with Bible verses. And somehow, only Nick seems to find this strange. Worst of all is the PC Box, into which the campers gleefully place daily prayers and confessions. With Jack nagging him to do it, Nick scribbles down his darkest secret-about his sister's death-and drops it in the box. But then the box is stolen, with Nick's secret inside of it. And when campers' confessions start appearing around the camp, Nick is desperate to get the box back-before the world learns the truth about what he did. The truth he can't even face himself. Laugh-out-loud funny, surreal, and insightful, this is an unforgettable novel about the strangeness of life, death, and grief-and the even stranger things people do to cope.

    Treasure Palaces

    Treasure Palaces

From a stunning villa on sunny Capri with Ali Smith to an unlikely temple in the heart of Copenhagen with Alan Hollinghurst, Treasure Palaces brings together over twenty of the world's greatest writers to give their own personal tours of the museums that have awed, haunted and inspired them. Join Andrew Motion as he muses on writerly methods in the British Library, or Matthew Sweet at the hands-on joy of the ABBA museum. Julian Barnes meditates on Jean Sibelius's music, as well as the composer's apple corer, while visiting his home in Helsinki. Jacqueline Wilson encounters the dolls of Le Musee de la Poupee, Tim Winton remembers his first bare-foot encounter with the National Gallery of Victoria, and Aminatta Forna ponders love tokens in The Museum of Broken Relationships. From mausoleums to massive galleries, from London and New York to Kabul and Zagreb, Treasure Palaces explores some of the world's greatest - and sometimes surprising - museums. The result is a collection of moving, lyrical essays that speak to the enduring power of museums in our cultural life, and will leave you longing to revisit your favourite treasure palace or looking for a new one to explore.

    Kopek the Destroyer

    Kopek the Destroyer

    Phil Owens

Phil and Ronnie started with two rabbits. Then along came Tim, a grouchy 11-year-old Border collie they adopted from the Blue Cross. Next, they acquired another rabbit, a guinea pig, yet another rabbit, and then a cat. Now whilst Phil has had dogs all his life, they were in the main, older rescue dogs and Ronnie's experience was limited to Tim, who they only had for 4 years. Living with Tim introduced Ronnie to the joys of canine ownership, so when he went to the great field in the sky, it was a no-brainer to look for another dog. However, they decided to get a puppy. A puppy was a new experience for both of them, and an experience it certainly was. There were plenty of incidents to cope with, as their new puppy grew up, many of which contributed to the slow deterioration of their newly renovated home.

    Team Chemistry

    Team Chemistry

    Nathan Michael Corzine

In 2007, the Mitchell Report shocked traditionalists who were appalled that drugs had corrupted the "pure" game of baseball. Nathan Corzine rescues the story of baseball's relationship with drugs from the sepia-toned tyranny of such myths. In Team Chemistry , he reveals a game splashed with spilled whiskey and tobacco stains from the day the first pitch was thrown. Indeed, throughout the game's history, stars and scrubs alike partook of a pharmacopeia that helped them stay on the field and cope off of it:* In 1889, Pud Galvin tried a testosterone-derived "elixir" to help him pile up some of his 646 complete games.* Sandy Koufax needed Codeine and an anti-inflammatory used on horses to pitch through his late-career elbow woes.* Players returning from World War II mainstreamed the use of the amphetamines they had used as servicemen.* Vida Blue invited teammates to cocaine parties, Tim Raines used it to stay awake on the bench, and Will McEnaney snorted it between innings.Corzine also ventures outside the lines to show how authorities handled--or failed to handle--drug and alcohol problems, and how those problems both shaped and scarred the game. The result is an eye-opening look at what baseball's relationship with substances legal and otherwise tells us about culture, society, and masculinity in America.

    Best of the Best

    Best of the Best

    Isabella Wallace, Leah Kirkman

Isabella Wallace and Leah Kirkman's Engagement is a carefully curated collection of experts' insights on the theme of teacher and learner engagement, which - as they ably demonstrate - can be facilitated and encouraged in a number of ways. The Best of the Best series brings together - for the first time - the most influential voices in education in a format that is concise, insightful and accessible for teachers. Keeping up with the latest and best ideas in education can be a challenge - as can putting them into practice - but this highly acclaimed series is here to help. Each title features a comprehensive collection of brief and accessible contributions from some of the most eminent names in education from around the world. In this third volume, Wallace and Kirkman explore the core concept of engagement - an essential facet of effective learning both for learners and for teachers - and share practical, realistic, cross-curricular and cross-phase strategies to make the most of these important insights. Engagement, whether of the teacher or the learners, can't be compelled and will always be contingent on the complexities of motivation. Indeed, it could be argued that it is teacher engagement which is the key to successful learning. Such engagement can be facilitated by encouraging professional dialogue between staff, or it may be that the school's high expectations alone could encourage in its teachers a sense of professional empowerment. But how do we recognise learner engagement, and what can we do to encourage it? From this compendium of expert voices emerge three important themes: that teachers' engagement and positive example should be seen as a prerequisite for establishing learner motivation; that learners' interest needs to be actively engaged, whether by meaningful challenge or by tapping into their natural curiosity; and that an expectation of appropriate behaviour must precede expectations of engagement. In this volume you will find many practical suggestions of ways to apply these ideas both in the classroom and in the staffroom. Each contributor has provided a list of further reading so you can dig deeper into the topic and, in addition, the Teacher Development Trust offer their advice on how to plan effective CPD and responsive changes to practice based on the contributors' suggestions. Contributions include: Sir Tim Brighouse argues that it is teacher engagement - specifically their collaborative evaluation, dialogue and planning - which is the key to successful learning. Dr Bill Rogers advocates a non-confrontational approach and illustrates how the teacher's verbal communications can be more effective when they are descriptive and assertive rather than imperative and confrontational. Vic Goddard suggests that a bottom-up, staff-led approach to CPD can be a more motivating catalyst for teacher engagement than that which is top-down and senior leadership team-led. Sue Cowley urges teachers to be responsive, adaptable, creative and flexible in the classroom and, instead of focusing on what students need to change, to take control of their teaching and decide what they need to change about themselves. Richard Gerver discusses his passionate belief that teachers and school leaders should trust in their profession and their children more and build a culture that shouts about an assumption of excellence. Andy Cope advises that teachers should focus on how they wish 'to be' in order to achieve the energy and empowerment to engage more effectively with their 'to do' list. Professor Bill Lucas focuses on the numerous ways that schools can encourage parental engagement in their children's learning. Ian Gilbert points out that in order to encourage engaged behaviour we need first to banish classroom boredom, and that the opposite of 'boring' in a learning context should be 'challenging'. Professor Susan Wallace focuses on teacher behaviour, suggesting that one of the most powerful ways of encouraging engagement is for the teacher to model the desired attitude by presenting themselves as enthusiastic and highly motivated. Andy Griffith makes the case that the learning challenge must be one which learners feel is achievable if they are to become properly involved and absorbed in the state of 'flow'. Dr Debra Kidd argues that the motivation to remain engaged will always be contingent on learners being able to see the relevance, purpose and value of what they are being asked to do. Conrad Wolfram - writing specifically about motivation in maths - suggests that, in addition to being achievable, the challenge must be carefully chosen: not any old abstract problem but one which learners feel motivated to solve. Paul Dix illustrates the importance of finding ways with which to engage learners' natural curiosity with an element of anticipation, surprise or even some mild jeopardy. John Davitt encourages the idea of engagement as 'doing', where learners are asked to demonstrate understanding in a variety of ways and through means other than simply writing. Phil Beadle raises the question of whether levels of engagement are largely contingent on geography and environment, suggesting that inner city schools may be facing the problem of learner disengagement on a scale not experienced elsewhere. Mike Gershon suggests that engagement in written work can be better stimulated by using discussion to help learners refine and articulate their ideas before they engage in a writing task. Professor Mick Waters argues that a gentle 'nudging' towards improved behaviour - for example, through the awarding of points - proves more effective than the use of sanctions or shaming. Teacher Development Trust - Next steps ... Suitable for all educationalists, including teachers and school leaders. Best of the Best: Engagement has been named the Silver Winner in the education category of the 2018 INDIES Book of the Year Awards.

    Teknologiledelse

    Teknologiledelse: for ingeniørstudier

Tim Torvatn, Monica Rolfsen, Tarjei Alvær Heggernes, Roger Sørheim

Denne læreboken dekker pensum for fellesfaget Teknologiledelse for ingeniørstudiene. Skylden man bærer

    Skylden man bærer

    Michael Hjorth, Hans Rosenfeldt

Men kanskje Tims datter Cathy husker noe? Simen Ingemundsen, Randaberg 24 (Terningkast 6)
