Thomas Stearns «T.S.» Eliot (1888-1965) fra St. Louis, USA, regnes gjerne som en av det 20. århundres største poeter, og ble hedret med Nobels litteraturpris i 1948. Store deler av sitt voksne liv var han bosatt i London, men han betraktet seg selv som en «utro blanding av alt», en kosmopolitt og dikterisk skraphandler.
