European Romanticism
Cultural diversity was an essential Romantic value. Previous English-language anthologies have tended to see Romanticism as predominantly British, even though the term 'Romanticism' actually originated in Germany, where it became the banner of a Europe-wide movement involving the profound intellectual and aesthetic changes which we now associate with modernity. This anthology is the first to place British Romanticism in a European context, showing how ideas and writers interconnected across national and linguistic boundaries. It aims to offer a new intellectual map of Romanticism, including key texts in both English and their original language, arranged by major themes: Art & Aesthetics; The Self; History; Language; Hermeneutics & Theology; Nature; The Exotic; Science. While focusing on the manifestations of European romanticism, the inclusion of essays on the North American and Japanese reception means that Romanticism can be seen ultimately as a global phenomenon, influencing a surprising number of the ways in which the modern world sees itself.

Cannabis and Spirituality
Truly a medicine for body and soul, one of cannabis's greatest gifts is its remarkable potential for spiritual healing and awakening. In this authoritative guide, editor Stephen Gray and 17 other influential voices of the modern cannabis movement explore the spiritual benefits of cannabis and offer guidance on how to interact with the intelligence of this plant ally, a companion and supporter of humanity for millennia. Exploring cannabis spirituality in practice, Gray's chapters examine dosage, strains, and methods of intake; the use of cannabis to open the creative channels; how to conduct group ceremonies with cannabis; and cautions and counterindications for cannabis use. We hear from Chris Bennett on the religious and ritual use of cannabis from pre-biblical times to the present, Joan Bello on marijuana and the body-mind connection, Dee Dussault on ganja yoga, Kathleen Harrison on humanity's co-evolution with cannabis, and cannabis shaman Hamilton Souther on working with the spirit of cannabis. The contributors explore the spiritual future of this plant ally as well as the ritual use of cannabis by the Rastafarians of Jamaica and the Sadhus of India. The chapters from Brazilian ayahuasca shaman Mariano da Silva and ayahuasca apprentice Francisco present wisdom on comingling the sacramental medicines of cannabis and ayahuasca.

Ethnic Identity and Inequalities in Britain
As debates around ethnic identity and inequality gain both political and media interest, this important book is the first to offer in-depth analysis from the last three UK population censuses focusing on the dynamics of ethnic identity and inequalities in contemporary Britain. While providing a comprehensive overview, it also clarifies concepts associated with greater ethnic diversity, increased segregation, exclusive growth of minority groups through immigration and a national identity crisis. The contributions, all from experts in the field based at or affiliated to the Centre on Dynamics of Ethnicity, highlight persistent inequalities in access to housing, employment, education and good health faced by some ethnic groups. The book will be a valuable resource for policy makers and researchers in national and local government, community groups, academics, students, and will act as an authoritative text to cite in reports, dissertations and funding applications.

Tourism
Examining exactly what social scientists mean by the term tourism, and what it means to be a tourist, this collection charts the sociological changes that have occurred in tourism, as well as the shift from the upper-class 'grand tours' of the late nineteenth-century to the mass tourism of the present day. With an astonishing breadth and range of content, these fascinating volumes assess the economic impacts of tourism on local economies, the environmental considerations to take into account, and whether the huge growth in tourism is sustainable in a post-September 11th world. Tourism: Critical Concepts in the Social Sciences is an accessible and comprehensive resource that is invaluable for academics and scholars researching tourism, globalization and human geography.

Methods in Computational Chemistry
Thisvolume isdevotedtomethodsfor thestudyoftheeffectsofrelativity on theelectronicstructure ofatomsand molecules. The accurate descrip- tionofrelativisticeffectsinheavyatomshaslongbeenrecognizedasoneof the central problems ofatomic physics. Contemporary relativistic atomic structure calculations can be performed almost routinely. Recent years have seen agrowinginterestin thestudyoftheeffects ofrelativityon the structureofmolecules. Even for molecularsystemscontainingatoms from thesecondrowoftheperiodictable theenergyassociatedwith relativistic effects is often larger than that arising from electron correlation. For moleculescontainingheavieratoms relativistic effects become increasingly important, andforsystemscontainingveryheavyatomsrelativityisknown todominatemanychemicalproperties. In this volum~, one of the pioneers of relativistic atomic structure calculations,Ian P. Grant, providesadetailedsurveyofthecomputational techniquesemployedincontemporarystudiesoftheeffectsofrelativityon atomicstructure. Thisisanareaofresearchinwhichcalculationscanoften lead to a particularly impressive degreeofagreement between theoryand experiment.Furthermore, theseatomicstudies haveprovided manyofthe foundations of a fully relativistic quantum chemistry. However, the spherical symmetry ofatoms allows significantsimplificationsto bemade in their quantum mechanical treatment, simplifications which are not possibleinstudiesofmolecules. Inparticular, as is wellknown from non- relativistictheoriesofmolecularelectronicstructure, itisalmostobligatory to invoke the algebraic approximation in molecular work and use finite basis set expansions. The problem of describing relativistic effects in molecules is addressed in Chapter2 by Stephen Wilson. This chapter is devotedtoab initiorelativisticmolecularstructurecalculationsinwhichall electrons are explicitly considered. The problem of induding relativistic effects in molecular studies is also addressed in Chapters3 and 4. In Chapter 3, Odd Gropen describes the use of relativistic effective core ix x Preface potentials in calculations on molecular systems involving heavy atoms. This approach can lead to more tractable algorithms than the methods described in Chapter2 and thus significantly extends the range of applications. The use of semiempirical methods has yielded a wealth of informationabouttheinfluenceofrelativityonthechemistryoftheheavier elements. Recreation and Tourism As a Catalyst for Urban Waterfront Redevelopment
As we reach the end of the 20th century, the world's cities are experiencing progressive tensions in urban use and structure. Despite piecemeal redevelopment, many major cities are struggling to maintain functional efficiency while sustaining acceptable levels of quality of life. A notable opportunity for successful redevelopment has emerged in rehabilitation of urban waterfront areas, and the present volume examines recreation and tourism as a catalyst for such waterfront redevelopment. Reviewing the experiences of cities in the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom, the Caribbean, and Australia, the volume points the way toward a set of principles and guidelines for the achievement of functional, aesthetic, and recreational harmony in urban environments.
