Zero to one: notes on startups, or how to build the future
What valuable company is nobody building? The next Bill Gates will not build an operating system. The next Larry Page or Sergey Brin won't make a search engine. If you are copying these guys, you aren't learning from them. It's easier to copy a model than to make something new: doing what we already know how to do takes the world from 1 to n, adding more of something familiar. Every new creation goes from 0 to 1. This book is about how to get there. "Peter Thiel has built multiple breakthrough companies, and Zero to One shows how". (Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX and Tesla). "This book delivers completely new and refreshing ideas on how to create value in the world". (Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook). "When a risk taker writes a book, read it. In the case of Peter Thiel, read it twice. Or, to be safe, three times. This is a classic". (Nassim Nicholas Taleb, author of The Black Swan).

The founders: Elon Musk, Peter Thiel and the company that made the modern internet
'A fascinating page-turner... An indispensable guide to modern innovation and entrepreneurship.' Walter Isaacson, no. 1 bestselling author of Steve Jobs Perfect for readers of Elon Musk by Ashlee Vance and Zero to One by Peter Theil Out of PayPal's ranks have come household names like Elon Musk, Peter Thiel, Max Levchin and Reid Hoffman. Since leaving Paypal, they have formed, funded, and advised the leading companies of our era, including Tesla, Facebook, YouTube, SpaceX, Yelp, Palantir, and LinkedIn, among many others. Yet for all their influence, the incredible story of where they started has gone largely untold. In The Founders, award-winning author Jimmy Soni narrates how a once-in-a-generation collaboration turned a scrappy start-up into one of the most successful businesses of all time. Facing bruising competition, internal strife, the emergence of widespread online fraud, and the devastating dot-com bust of the 2000s, their success was anything but certain. But they would go on to change our world forever. Informed by hundreds of interviews and unprecedented access to thousands of pages of internal material, The Founders explores how the seeds of so much of what drives the internet today were planted two decades ago.

Becoming a Venture Capitalist is not only an exclusive look into the world of legendary venture firms-as well as stories of their most interesting characters, including Peter Thiel, Reid Hoffman, and Mark Zuckerberg-but a wonderful guide on how to break into a seemingly impenetrable world.

Mayhem, Murder and Marijuana
A few years ago the author noticed that astute investors such as Peter Thiel (PayPal) and the Pritzker family (Hyatt Hotels) had invested millions in Medical Marijuana (MMJ) related firms; his contrarian investing curiosity became intrigued. As a consequence the author commenced acquiring legal Medical Marijuana dispensaries and ancillary firms in Los Angeles County -- the largest MMJ market in the world. Because marijuana usage and legalization is currently such a hot topic in social and political circles; the novel, 'Mayhem, Murder & Marijuana'; subtitled 'The Los Angeles Marijuana War' describes the current situation.Although the Mexican cartel largely abandoned the MMJ cultivation and distribution business after the legalization of MMJ dispensaries by the Los Angeles City Council, the author wrote the novel to describe the avaricious miscreants that still dominate the Los Angeles MMJ market. Drawn to the immense potential profits in MMJ, these MMJ owners make used car salespeople appear to be paragons of virtue. To this day, the author is astonished at the magnitude of violence, intimidation, police abuse, and illegal trafficking. The story describes the actual threats the author received, the forgeries of identification to obtain lease approval, the never-ending partying, the deaths from drug overdosing, and the proliferation of tweakers whose occupation is to steal to finance their noxious habit.By the way, due to threats to the author's life regarding the writing of this story, the a pseudonym has been selected to protect my family.

Move Fast and Break Things: How Facebook, Google, and Amazon Cornered Culture and Undermined Democracy
A stinging polemic that traces the destructive monopolization of the Internet by Google, Facebook and Amazon, and that proposes a new future for musicians, journalists, authors and filmmakers in the digital age. Move Fast and Break Things is a path-breaking polemic in support of the future of the creative industries in the age of the Internet platform. The title, taken from a term coined by Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg, originally referred to reckless hacker culture at the social media behemoth. In Taplin's telling, Move Fast and Break Things piquantly describes the way in which the largest Internet platforms--Facebook, Google and Amazon-used the music, news and film industries to build their businesses to scale only to sideline them, and the millions of Americans who work for them. The result is a news industry subservient to social media traffic, a music industry in which life is harder than ever for the "middle class" musician, and a book industry threatened by the overwhelming digital market share of a single retailer. As broadband ubiquity increases, the film and television industries will be the next victim. Taplin's story, studded with unforgettable stories from his half century as a music and film producer and early pioneer of streaming video online, begins with a small group of libertarian entrepreneurs, Peter Thiel and Larry Page among them, who in the 1990s began to hijack the original decentralized version of the Internet to create the monopoly firms which now determine the financial destiny of most cultural products in the United States. Taplin offers a masterful interpretation of the way these firms and individuals began to shape online life in their own image: tolerating piracy of books, music and film while at the same time promoting opaque business practices and subordinating privacy of individual users to create the surveillance marketing monoculture of sponsored content and other forms of relentless advertisement from which so many are alienated. Unafraid to cut through Silicon Valley jargon, Taplin assesses the economic toll of the digital shift and interprets in a vital, forward-thinking way how artists everywhere can reclaim their audiences with knowledge of the past and a determination to work together.

Life after Google The Fall of Big Data and the Rise of the Blockchain Economy
FROM THE WALL STREET JOURNAL: "Nothing Mr. Gilder says or writes is ever delivered at anything less than the fullest philosophical decibel... Mr. Gilder sounds less like a tech guru than a poet, and his words tumble out in a romantic cascade." “Google’s algorithms assume the world’s future is nothing more than the next moment in a random process. George Gilder shows how deep this assumption goes, what motivates people to make it, and why it’s wrong: the future depends on human action.” — Peter Thiel, founder of PayPal and Palantir Technologies and author of Zero to One: Notes on Startups, or How to Build the Future The Age of Google, built on big data and machine intelligence, has been an awesome era. But it’s coming to an end. In Life after Google, George Gilder—the peerless visionary of technology and culture—explains why Silicon Valley is suffering a nervous breakdown and what to expect as the post-Google age dawns. Google’s astonishing ability to “search and sort” attracts the entire world to its search engine and countless other goodies—videos, maps, email, calendars….And everything it offers is free, or so it seems. Instead of paying directly, users submit to advertising. The system of “aggregate and advertise” works—for a while—if you control an empire of data centers, but a market without prices strangles entrepreneurship and turns the Internet into a wasteland of ads. The crisis is not just economic. Even as advances in artificial intelligence induce delusions of omnipotence and transcendence, Silicon Valley has pretty much given up on security. The Internet firewalls supposedly protecting all those passwords and personal information have proved hopelessly permeable. The crisis cannot be solved within the current computer and network architecture. The future lies with the “cryptocosm”—the new architecture of the blockchain and its derivatives. Enabling cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin and ether, NEO and Hashgraph, it will provide the Internet a secure global payments system, ending the aggregate-and-advertise Age of Google. Silicon Valley, long dominated by a few giants, faces a “great unbundling,” which will disperse computer power and commerce and transform the economy and the Internet. Life after Google is almost here.

Seismic shifts during a single generation have created a country of winners and losers, allowing unprecedented freedom while rending the social contract, driving the political system to the verge of breakdown, and setting citizens adrift to find new paths forward. In The Unwinding, George Packer, author of The Assassins' Gate: America in Iraq, tells the story of the United States over the past three decades in an utterly original way, with his characteristically sharp eye for detail and gift for weaving together complex narratives.
The Unwinding journeys through the lives of several Americans, including Dean Price, the son of tobacco farmers, who becomes an evangelist for a new economy in the rural South; Tammy Thomas, a factory worker in the Rust Belt trying to survive the collapse of her city; Jeff Connaughton, a Washington insider oscillating between political idealism and the lure of organized money; and Peter Thiel, a Silicon Valley billionaire who questions the Internet's significance and arrives at a radical vision of the future. Packer interweaves these intimate stories with biographical sketches of the era's leading public figures, from Newt Gingrich to Jay-Z, and collages made from newspaper headlines, advertising slogans, and song lyrics that capture the flow of events and their undercurrents.
The Unwinding portrays a superpower in danger of coming apart at the seams, its elites no longer elite, its institutions no longer working, its ordinary people left to improvise their own schemes for success and salvation. Packer's novelistic and kaleidoscopic history of the new America is his most ambitious work to date.

The Science of the Perfect Swing
While golf has a popular following among casual fans, it has become popular among another passionate yet unlikely group: scientists. Beyond the caddies, carts, and clubs, the game of golf is an applied science. The seemingly simple act of striking a golf ball invokes a wide range of processes, including physics principles such as energy transfer, kinetics, launch angles, spin, and momentum. However, in spite of the growing interest in the fledgling field of "golfscience," few books thus far have provided a comprehensive introduction of the subject. In The Science of the Perfect Swing, mechanical engineer Peter Dewhurst offers a full treatment of the science of modern golf. Based on three decades of experience in the physics of golf, Dewhurst examines topics such as the interaction between club face and ball, various aspects of trajectory and impact, and the physics of putting. Rich in illustrations, graphs, and charts, Dewhurst presents physics-based discussions in an accessible format. Each chapter also contains a substantial"Findings and Consequences" section, which draws conclusions based on the science, and makes recommendations on ball-striking and other facets of the game. From the mechanics of club design to modeling the trajectory of the ball once it leaves the club face, The Science of the Perfect Swing unravels some of theelusive mysteries about what it takes to play a great game of golf. Interesting and informative, The Science of the Perfect Swing strikes a perfect balance between hard science and an accessible tone that will appeal to golf enthusiasts, engineers, and general readers of sports science.

The Power of Identity and Ideology in Language Learning
This critical ethnographic school-based case study offers insights onthe interaction between ideology and the identity development of individualEnglish language learners in Singapore. Illustrated by case studies of thelanguage learning experiences of five Asian immigrant students in anEnglish-medium school in Singapore, the author examines how the immigrantstudents negotiated a standard English ideology and their discursivepositioning over the course of the school year. Specifically, the study traceshow the prevailing standard English ideology interacted in highly complex wayswith their being positioned as high academic achievers to ultimately influencetheir learning of English. This potent combination of language ideologies andcirculating ideologies created a designer student immigration complex. Byframing this situation as a complex, the study problematizes the power of ideologiesin shaping the trajectories and identities of language learners.
