Grammaticalization
Paperback edition

This is a general introduction to grammaticalization, the change whereby lexical terms and constructions come in certain linguistic contexts to serve grammatical functions, and, once grammaticalized, continue to develop new grammatical functions. The authors synthesize work from several areas of linguistics, including historical linguistics, discourse analysis, and pragmatics. Data are drawn from many languages including Ewe, Finnish, French, Hindi, Hittite, Japanese, Malay, and especially English. This second edition has been thoroughly revised with substantial updates on theoretical and methodological issues that have arisen in the decade since the first edition, and includes a significantly expanded bibliography. Particular attention is paid to recent debates over directionality in change and the role of grammaticalization in creolization. Grammaticalization will be a valuable and stimulating textbook for all linguists interested in the development of grammatical forms and will also be of interest to readers in anthropology and psychology.

Contents
Preface to the second edition and acknowledgements; List of abbreviations; 1. Summary Justice
The last time Tess de Vere saw William Benson she was a law student on work experience. He was a twenty-one year old, led from the dock of the Old Bailey to begin a life sentence for murder. He'd said he was innocent. She'd believed him.Sixteen years later Tess overhears a couple of hacks mocking a newcomer to the London Bar, a no-hoper with a murder conviction, running his own show from an old fishmonger's in Spitalfields. That night she walks back into Benson's life. The price of his rehabilitation - and access to the Bar - is an admission of guilt to the killing of Paul Harbeton, whose family have vowed revenge. He's an outcast. The government wants to shut him down and no solicitor will instruct him. But he's subsidised by a mystery benefactor and a desperate woman has turned to him for help: Sarah Collingstone, mother of a child with special needs, accused of slaying her wealthy lover. It's a hopeless case and the murder trial, Benson's first, starts in four days. The evidence is overwhelming but like Benson long ago, she swears she's innocent. Tess joins the defence team, determined to help Benson survive. But as Benson follows the twists and turns in the courtroom, Tess embarks upon a secret investigation of her own, determined to uncover the truth behind the death of Paul Harbeton on a lonely night in Soho.True to life, fast-paced and absolutely compelling, Summary Justice introduces a new series of courtroom dramas featuring two maverick lawyers driven to fight injustice at any cost.

Understanding and Treating Your Migraine
What is a migraine? If you asked five different migraine sufferers, you'd probably get five different answers. Why? Because migraines are different for everyone.Your migraine attacks are as unique as your fingerprints and the experience you have during an attack won't be the same as anyone else's. As there's no one way to get a migraine, there's also no one way to prevent or treat them.Researchers used to think migraine was a vascular condition, or one related to the blood vessels, but it's now classed as neurological, which means it's related to the nervous system. What's more, they don't yet know what causes you to get migraines, and there's no test you can have to get diagnosed. So migraines are a bit of a mystery. Frustrating, right? Don't worry. You don't need to know why you suffer from migraines to understand how to reduce the number of attacks you get or even avoid them altogether. The aim of this book is to help you figure out the best way to prevent your migraines. The first step is to try to understand your own experience. Then you'll be able to figure out how to reduce your attacks, or even stop them altogether.

Seeking Aliveness
Praise for We Make the Road by Walking: 'innovative and refreshing' - Christianity magazineIn his 2014 book We Make the Road by Walking Brian McLaren gave a basic orientation on what it means to be 'a new kind of Christian' through 52 sermons, working within the framework of the church year and providing a Genesis-Revelation overview of the Bible. It was designed to be used in church services and small groups, and was praised by New Testament scholar Paula Gooder and enthusiastically adopted by many. Seeking Aliveness is a repurposing of this material for use by individuals, breaking up the text into daily devotions, along with the original suggested Bible readings and with a prayer, thought or action point for each day. Brian's original writing is transformed beautifully into a daily read, for admirers of the original book as well as a new audience. 'An ideal resource' - Church Times

Letters I Never Sent to You
Letters I Never Sent to You is a collection of impressions and encounters; of people briefly met and of places passed through and lived in. It explores the sometimes slippery nature of the word "home", and how love and heartbreak can be felt just as strongly for a place as for a person. It explores connection and disconnection with places, people and the spaces in which we encounter them. From Washington D.C. to London, from Accra to Paris and onwards to Berlin, Letters I Never Sent to You tells stories of a life split between places, identities, languages, nationalities, sexualities and of running away and running into yourself, of love lost and found again. Having created work for stage, film, page and performance Paula Varjack has been writing to you for nearly a decade with no expectations of ever hearing your reactions. Can you write yourself into existence? Paula did, and she wants to open up to you, even though (and perhaps especially because) you might not have ever met. What would you share with someone you would never see again?

You May See a Stranger
Miranda Weber is a hot mess. In Paula Whyman's debut collection of stories, we find her hoarding duct tape to ward off terrorists, stumbling into a drug run with a crackhead, and-frequently-enduring the bad behavior of men. A drivers' education class pulsing with racial tension is the unexpected context of her sexual awakening. As she comes of age, and in the three decades that follow, the potential for violence always hovers nearby. She's haunted by the fate of her disabled sister and-thanks to the crack cocaine epidemic of the '80s, the wars in the Middle East, and sniper attacks-the threat of crime and terror in her hometown of Washington, D.C. Miranda can be lascivious, sardonic, and maddeningly self-destructive, but, no matter what befalls her, she never loses her sharp wit or powers of observation, which illuminate both her own life and her strange, unsettling times.
