Who Wrote the Dead Sea Scrolls: The Search for the Secret of Qumran
Since their earliest discovery in 1947, the Scrolls have been the object of fascination and extreme controversy. Challenging traditional dogma, Golb has been the leading proponent of the view that the Scrolls cannot be the work of a small, desert-dwelling fringe sect, as various earlier scholars had claimed, but are in all likelihood the remains of libraries of various Jewish groups, smuggled out of Jerusalem and hidden in desert caves during the Roman siege of 70 A. D.

Mind of an Outlaw
NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY "THE GLOBE AND MAIL" Norman Mailer was one of the towering figures of twentieth-century American letters and an acknowledged master of the essay. "Mind of an Outlaw, " the first posthumous publication from this outsize literary icon, collects Mailer's most important and representative work in the form that many rank as his most electrifying. As America's foremost public intellectual, Norman Mailer was a ubiquitous presence in our national life--on the airwaves and in print--for more than sixty years. With his supple mind and pugnacious persona, he engaged society more than any other writer of his generation. The trademark Mailer swagger is much in evidence in these pages as he holds forth on culture, ideology, politics, sex, gender, and celebrity, among other topics. Here is Mailer on boxing, Mailer on Hemingway, Mailer on Marilyn Monroe, and, of course, Mailer on Mailer--the one subject that served as the beating heart of all of his nonfiction. From his early essay "A Credo for the Living," published in 1948, when the author was twenty-five, to his final writings in the year before his death, Mailer wrestled with the big themes of his times. He was one of the most astute cultural commentators of the postwar era, a swashbuckling intellectual provocateur who never pulled a punch and was rarely anything less than interesting. "Mind of an Outlaw" spans the full arc of Mailer's evolution as a writer, including such essential pieces as his acclaimed 1957 meditation on hipsters, "The White Negro"; multiple selections from his seminal collection "Advertisements for Myself;" and a never-before-published essay on Sigmund Freud. Incendiary, erudite, and unrepentantly outrageous, Norman Mailer was a dominating force on the battlefield of ideas. Featuring an incisive Introduction by Jonathan Lethem, "Mind of an Outlaw" forms a fascinating portrait of Mailer's intellectual development across the span of his career as well as the preoccupations of a nation in the last half of the American century. Praise for "Mind of an Outlaw" " " " Mailer's] best and brightest."--"Esquire" " " "The fifty essays collected in this retrospective volume span sixty-four years and show Norman] Mailer (1923-2007) at his brawny, pugnacious, and egotistical best. . . . This provocative collection brims with insights and reflections that show why Mailer is regarded as a great literary mind of his generation."--"Publishers Weekly" " " "The selections open a window onto the capacious mind and process of one of the most volatile intellects of the twentieth century."--"Library Journal" " " "Vintage Mailer: brilliant, infuriating, witty and never, ever boring.""--Tampa Bay Times" "As good an introduction to Mailer's habits of mind as there's ever been."--"Kirkus Reviews" " " "There's no arguing about Mailer the essayist--he was outstanding. . . . These insightful essays educate, argue and persuade on everything from politics and literature to film, philosophy and the human condition."--"Shelf Awareness" "From the Hardcover edition."

The Atlantic and its enemies: cold war history
The Atlantic and its Enemies is Norman Stone's personal, uncompromising and provocative history of how the West 'won' the Cold War. For decades after the end of the Second World War, most of the globe either laboured under Communist rule or else was lost in a violent stagnancy that seemed doomed to permanence. For every Atlantic success there seemed to be a dozen Communist or Third World successes, as the USSR and its proxies, whether in Berlin, Cuba, Vietnam or China, crushed dissent and humiliated the United States on both military and cultural grounds. Then, suddenly, the Atlantic won - economically, ideologically, militarily - with astonishing speed and comprehensiveness. With wit and brio, Norman Stone's The Atlantic and its Enemies offers a unique perspective on events, from Vietnam to glasnost, and draws on his own experiences - such as his time in a Slovak prison - to show both the tragedy and the absurdity of the struggle that divided the world for over forty years. 'Opinionated, mischievous, enthralling ... an exhilarating read' Boyd Tonkin, Independent 'Lively, idiosyncratic, rollicking' Geoffrey Wheatcroft, Observer 'Masterly ... the one book that anyone who wants to understand the Cold War must read' John Gray, New Statesman 'A swashbuckling survey of the cold war' Mark Mazower, Financial Times '[Stone] has a terrific eye for detail, bringing to life everything from the ruins of Germany to Ronald Reagan's White House with a wonderfully waspish turn of phrase' Economist Norman Stone is one of Britain's most celebrated historians. He is the author of The Eastern Front, 1914-1917, Hitler: An Introduction, Europe Transformed and World War One: A Short History.

The Mechanisms of Institutional Conflict in the European Union
How institutional conflicts arise in international political orders and the conditions shaping the outcomes of such conflicts has become the object of considerable contemporary focus. This book considers the dynamics of institutional conflict and institutional change in international organizations, specifically focusing on the European Union, the most highly integrated international political order on the globe. In a world where political decision making increasingly takes place above the nation state level, it theorises the social mechanisms that lead to the point at which these tensions become explicit and the customary functioning of international political orders tips into outright conflict between different organizational entities. Taking a constructivist approach, it examines two in-depth case studies - in the field of Justice and Home Affairs (JHA) and the EU's Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) - to explain the dynamics of the processes that lead up to institutional conflicts and provide some explanation for their final outcomes. This text will be of key interest to fields of and European Integration, EU Politics and more broadly International Relations.

The Best of London
There are great world cities - from classical capitals to modern metropolises - and then there's London. One of the oldest settlements in the Western world, its history stretches back to the Bronze Age, through Roman rule and the Norman Conquest, the machinations of the Middle Ages and the inventiveness of the Industrial Revolution, through to the Swinging Sixties and the new Millennium. London is the yardstick by which other cities are measured. It has the most astonishing ability to reinvent itself, always staying one step ahead of the pack, a magnet for creatives - be they writers or artists, designers or thinkers - and a melting pot of cultures from around the globe. New York may be hip, Paris may be chic, but London is surely the Capital of Cool. The largest city in Europe, Greater London covers over 610mi (1,580km) with a population of 8.6 million. It's Britain's seat of government, the home of the Royal Family, the UK's commercial, cultural and sporting centre, Europe's leading financial market, the 'capital' of the English-speaking world; and a world leader in architecture, art, fashion, food, music, publishing, film and television. London is also Europe's most culturally diverse city and one of the most cosmopolitan in the world; one in three Londoners (some 3 million people) were born outside the UK, hailing from all corners of the globe, particularly Europe and the Commonwealth countries of Africa, Asia and the West Indies. To add to this cultural potpourri, a phenomenal 20 million tourists swell London's population each year. In creating this book we decided that the best way to illustrate London's cool credentials was to illustrate the very best that the city has to offer across a wide range of interests. So we've bar-hopped and dined, shopped and supped, boogied and bartered, and even gone for the burn in order to sample the city's best attractions. These include the coolest cocktail bars, smartest hotels, cosiest cafes and most atmospheric pubs, as well as restaurants that truly celebrate food and shops that redefine the art of retail therapy. Add to these the most exclusive members' clubs, hi-tech temples to fitness and celebrity hotspots, and you have an idea of where we're going. And to take in some of London's more traditional pleasures we've included magnificent museums and awesome art galleries, breathtaking buildings, glorious churches and a swathe of tranquil green spaces that make London one of the greenest capitals in the world. Some names are instantly recognisable - from the British Museum to the Shard - while others may surprise, and all are among the very best that London offers - and are therefore, by definition, among the very best in the world. We trust that you'll enjoy exploring them and that you'll agree that London - at its best - is truly unbeatable. Welcome to the Big Smoke

Abandoned Castles
An ancient hilltop fortress. A crusader citadel in the West Bank. A fairytale medieval castle fallen into ruin. From ancient times to the end of the nineteenth century, Abandoned Castles explores more than 100 forts, castles and defensive strongholds from all around the globe. From medieval Japanese castles to Spanish colonial forts in WestAfrica to Norman stone keeps, the book ranges widely across history. Many have long ceased to serve a purpose, but then, like the crusader castle Krak de Chevaliers in Syria today, their impenetrable walls become the site of more fighting centuries later. Others, such as the Cathar Cha teau de Queribus in southern France, stand high above peaceful coastlines, testament to the wars of the past. Some are beautiful, others brutal, but each tells a story about the way we fought and defended ourselves, and how the building has survived and aged, long after the people it was built by are gone. With 150 outstanding colour photographs, Abandoned Castles is a brilliant pictorial examination of castles, forts, keeps, and defensive fortifications from the ancient world to the end of the nineteenth century.

Stet
Diana Athill's Stet is "a beautifully written, hardheaded, and generally insightful look back at the heyday of postwar London publishing by a woman who was at its center for nearly half a century" (The Washington Times). A founding editor of the prestigious publishing house Andre Deutsch, Ltd., Athill takes us on a guided tour through the corridors of literary London, offering a keenly observed, devilishly funny, and always compassionate portrait of the glories and pitfalls of making books. Stet is a must-read for the literarily curious, who will revel in Athill's portraits of such great literary figures as Jean Rhys, V. S. Naipaul, Norman Mailer, Philip Roth, Mordecai Richler, and others. Spiced with candid observations about the type of people who make brilliant writers and ingenious publishers (and the idiosyncrasies of both), Stet is an invaluable contribution to the literature of literature, and in the words of the Sunday Telegraph, "all would-be authors and editors should have a copy." "Wryly humorous ... notable for its extraordinary lucidity...." -- The New York Times Book Review "A beguiling tonic to book business sob stories... Stet can barely contain Athill's charm and great big heart." -- Newsday "In addition to telling a good story, Athill writes profoundly about how she is affected by the books she loves." -- The Boston Globe

Reoccupying the Political
Focusing on the increasing refusal and transgression of politics as normal across the globe, this book examines new forms of democratisation, democratic life and political subjectivity, as people seek to gain control over the decisions and processes affecting their lives. The contributors to this volume challenge the hegemonic truth regimes of political science by bringing to our attention practices and discussions on the margins of political theorisation and conceptualisation. They offer a pluridiveristy of theorisations and engagements that mirror the very practises of democratic life of which they speak. They demonstrate how research on the margins enables us to develop and deepen our conceptualisation and engagement with these new forms of democratic thought and practice, and hence our understanding of the political and the transformation of political science. These new forms of politics call into question the epistemological authority of political science, and this book will be of interest to those seeking to understand the increasing trend towards prefigurative epistemologies, decolonising methodologies and participatory forms of becoming political. This book was originally published as a special issue of Social Identities.

Orlando
