    Digital Sound Studies

    Digital Sound Studies

The digital turn has created new opportunities for scholars across disciplines to use sound in their scholarship. This volume's contributors provide a blueprint for making sound central to research, teaching, and dissemination. They show how digital sound studies has the potential to transform silent, text-centric cultures of communication in the humanities into rich, multisensory experiences that are more inclusive of diverse knowledges and abilities. Drawing on multiple disciplines-including rhetoric and composition, performance studies, anthropology, history, and information science-the contributors to Digital Sound Studies bring digital humanities and sound studies into productive conversation while probing the assumptions behind the use of digital tools and technologies in academic life. In so doing, they explore how sonic experience might transform our scholarly networks, writing processes, research methodologies, pedagogies, and knowledges of the archive. As they demonstrate, incorporating sound into scholarship is thus not only feasible but urgently necessary. Contributors. Myron M. Beasley, Regina N. Bradley, Steph Ceraso, Tanya Clement, Rebecca Dowd Geoffroy-Schwinden, W. F. Umi Hsu, Michael J. Kramer, Mary Caton Lingold, Darren Mueller, Richard Cullen Rath, Liana M. Language Unlimited

    Language Unlimited

Queen Mary University of London) Adger David (Professor of Linguistics

All humans, but no other species, have the capacity to create and understand language. It provides structure to our thoughts, allowing us to plan, communicate, and create new ideas, without limit. Yet we have only finite experiences, and our languages have finite stores of words. Where does our linguistic creativity come from? How does the endless scope of language emerge from our limited selves?Drawing on research from neuroscience, psychology, and linguistics, David Adger takes the reader on a journey to the hidden structure behind all we say (or sign) and understand. Along the way you'll meet children who created language out of almost nothing, and find out how new languages emerge using structures found in languages spoken continents away. David Adger will show you how the more than 7000 languages in the world appear to obey the same deep scientific laws, how to invent a languagethat breaks these, and how our brains go crazy when we try to learn languages that just aren't possible. You'll discover why rats are better than we are at picking up certain language patterns, why apes are far worse at others, and how artificial intelligences, such as those behind Alexa and Siri, understand language in a very un-human way. Language Unlimited explores the many mysteries about our capacity for language and reveals the source of its endless creativity.

The Oxford Reference Guide to Lexical Functional Grammar

The Oxford Reference Guide to Lexical Functional Grammar

University of Oxford) Dalrymple Mary (Professor of Syntax, University of Oxford) Lowe John J. (Departmental Lecturer in Syntax and in Indo-Iranian Philology, University of Oxford) Mycock Louise (Associate Professor of Linguistics

This volume is the most comprehensive reference work to date on Lexical Functional Grammar. The authors provide detailed and extensive coverage of the analysis of syntax, semantics, morphology, prosody, and information structure, and how these aspects of linguistic structure interact in the nontransformational framework of LFG. The book is divided into three parts. The first part examines the syntactic theory and formal architecture of LFG, with detailed explanations and comprehensive illustration, providing an unparalleled introduction to the fundamentals of the theory. Part two explores non-syntactic levels of linguistic structure, including the syntax-semantics interface and semantic representation, argument structure, information structure, prosodic structure, and morphological structure, and how these are relatedin the projection architecture of LFG. Chapters in the third part illustrate the theory more explicitly by presenting explorations of the syntax and semantics of a range of representative linguistic phenomena: modification, anaphora, control, coordination, and long-distance dependencies. The finalchapter discusses LFG-based work not covered elsewhere in the book, as well as new developments in the theory. The volume will be an invaluable reference for graduate and advanced undergraduate students and researchers in a wide range of linguistic sub-fields, including syntax, morphology, semantics, information structure, and prosody, as well as those working in language documentation and description.

A Phonetic Investigation into Raddoppiamento sintattico in Sienese Italian

A Phonetic Investigation into Raddoppiamento sintattico in Sienese Italian

    Mary. Stevens

This book studies the linguistic phenomenon of "Raddoppiamento sintattico" (RS), the post-lexical lengthening in Italian of word-initial consonants following certain words, e.g. <i>a </i>[k:]<i>asa </i>'at home'. Linguists have long sought describe exactly where and why RS occurs. Based on naturally occurring speech recorded in Siena, Tuscany, this book provides detailed phonetic information on what happens when RS occurs as well as its interactions with other phenomena in natural speech such as lenition and pausing. This study relates this phonetic detail to existing phonological models of RS, vowel length and syllable structure in Italian. The most important subject of the book is the fine-grained description of stops in RS contexts, which are shown to be optionally preaspirated - a phenomenon typically associated with only a few languages outside of Scandinavia. The book considers in detail the potential role of preaspiration in signaling consonant length in this variety of Italian and in doing so serves as a useful model for other laboratory phonology investigations into connected speech processes.

Massenet: Catalogue General des Oeuvres/Massenet: General Catalogue of Works

Massenet: Catalogue General des Oeuvres/Massenet: General Catalogue of Works

    Herve Oleon, Mary Dibbern

The purpose of this bi-lingual catalogue, written in French and English, is to facilitate research, performance, and general appreciation of Massenet's music. The Massenet General Catalogue is a complete inventory of the known works of the composer. For each work, it provides the vocal and/or instrumental requirements (including the tessituras of the operatic roles), the author(s) of associated texts, the location of manuscripts, and other pertinent details. The authors, established specialists in nineteenth-century French music, have created an inventory of works according to specific genres, including opera, sacred music, cantatas and scenes, choruses, incidental music, symphonic music, piano music, and songs. For the songs, numbering some 300 titles, the authors list information for each song as well as the components of cycles and collections. The Catalogue includes explanatory paragraphs and annotations, a select bibliography, and a biographical chronology. There are also appendices with explanations of versions of certain works, the operas Thais (the original version and a major revision), Manon (the original opera-comique version and the entirely sung version), and the ballet L'Histoire de Manon, a retelling of the Manon story using music from Massenet's other works, selected and orchestraed by Leighton Lucas. Finally, the catalogue's authors have created a system of DO numbers (Dibbern-Oleon) which serve to define the scope of Massenet's music. These cataloguing numbers are meant to be used as the definitive reference numbers for Massenet's oeuvre.

Metaphor and Ideology : Liber Antiquitatum Biblicarum and Literary Methods through a Cognitive Lens

    Mary Therese. DesCamp

Contemporary scholars have sharply disagreed over the importance of the loquacious women of ""Liber Antiquitatum Biblicarum,"" Using the methods of contemporary Cognitive Linguistics, ""Ideology and Metaphor"" develops a systematic, replicable reading of the text and its characters, showing how Pseudo-Philo uses these women's stories to articulate the text's theology and ideology. The analysis also explores how the author redefines the term mother in order to sanction the female authority to interpret and instruct. The conceptual blends that compose the text's distinctive and sometimes dissona

    Functional Grammatics

    Functional Grammatics

Mary Macken-Horarik, Kristina Love, Carmel Sandiford, Len Unsworth

This book provides a re-conceptualization of grammar in a period of change in the communication landscape and widening disciplinary knowledge. Drawing on resources in systemic functional linguistics, the book envisions a `functional grammatics' relevant to disciplinary domains such as literary study, rhetoric and multimodality. It re-imagines the possibilities of grammar for school English through Halliday's notion of grammatics. Functional Grammatics is founded on decades of research inspired by systemic functional linguistics, and includes studies of grammatical tools useful to teachers of English, research into visual and multimodal literacies and studies of the genre-grammar connection. It aims to be useful to the interpretation and composition of texts in school English, portable in design across texts and contexts and beneficial for language development. The book will be of interest to researchers and teacher educators, as well as undergraduate and postgraduate students and practicing teachers committed to evidence-based professional development.

    Keep It R.E.A.L.!

    Mary Amanda Stewart

This book introduces a set of pedagogical practices designed to assist adolescent English learners in developing their English skills in a way that honors and leverages their native language(s) and cultures. Responding to the linguistic and educational diversity of adolescents, the R.E.A.L. (Relevant, Engaging, and Affirming Literacy) method offers teachers a range of scalable activities, reading lists, and other resources, along with numerous suggestions on how to adapt them for students' particular needs. By sharing experiences from actual secondary English classes, the author presents diverse learners making meaningful connections to texts and responding through writing, speaking, and other artistic means. These students are developing high levels of literacy, English language skills, and even biliteracy through R.E.A.L. instruction that all English teachers can use with their students.

The Voice of the Child in American Literature

The Voice of the Child in American Literature

    Mary Jane Hurst

We as adults are reflected in our children, those in our literature as well as those in our familes, and so it is natural to want to examine their presence among us. Children and child speech are important literary elements which merit careful critical analysis. Surprisingly, comprehensive studies of the child in American fiction have not been previously attempted and fictional child speech, even that of individual characters has been almost totally ignored. Nevertheless, the language of fictional children warrants attention for several reasons. First, language and language acquisition are primary issues for children much as sexual development is primary issues for adolescents. Second, because vast linguistic efforts have been directed toward language acquisition research, a broad base of concrete information exists with which to explore the topic. And, third, language is a key which opens many doors. An understanding of fictional children's language leads to discoveries about various critical questions, sociological and psychological as well as textual and stylistic. This study examines the presentation of children and child language in American fiction by applying general linguistic principles as well as specific findings from child language acquisition research to children's speech in literary texts. It clarifies, sorts, and assesses the representations of child speech in American fiction. It tests on fictional discourse linguistic concepts heretofore applied exclusively to naturally occurring child language. The aim is not to evaluate the degree of realism in writers' presentations of child language, for that would be a simplistic and reductive enterprise. Rather, the overall object is to analyze fictional child language using linguistic methods.
