Postcolonial Literature and Challenges for the New Millennium
This volume brings together an international range of postcolonial scholars to explore four distinct themes which are inherently interconnected within the globalised landscape of the early 21st century: China, Islamic fundamentalism, civil war and environmentalism. Through close-reading a range of literary texts by writers drawn from across the globe, these essays seek to emphasise the importance of literary aesthetics in situating the theoretical underpinnings and political motivations of postcolonial studies in the new millennium. Colonial legacies, especially in terms of structuring exploitative capitalist relations between countries and regions are shown to persist in postcolonial nations in the form of `global civil wars' and systemic environmental waste. Chinese authoritarianism and the Indian picturesque represent less familiar forms of neo-colonialism. These essays not only engage with established writers such as Salman Rushdie and Anita Desai; they also critically reflect on work by Nadeem Aslam, Mai Couto, Romesh Gunesekara, Bei Dao and Ma Jian. This book was originally published as a special issue of Textual Practice.

Beijing coma
As the millennium draws near, Dai Wei, a pro-democracy protestor who was shot during the demonstration at Tiananmen Square in 1989, has been in a coma for almost a decade. As he wakes, he realises that the rich imaginative world afforded to him as a coma patient is a startling contrast with the death-in-life of the world outside.

Soil, Fertilizer, and Plant Silicon Research in Japan
Silicon (Si) plays a significant role in the resistance of plants to multiple stresses including biotic and abiotic stresses. Silicon is also the only element that does not damage plants when accumulated in excess. However, the contribution of Si to plant growth has been largely ignored due to its universal existence in the earth's crust. From numerous intensive studies on Si, initiated in Japan about 80 years ago, Japanese scientists realized that Si was important for the healthy growth of rice and for stability of rice production. In a worldwide first, silicon was recognized as a valuable fertilizer in Japan. The beneficial effects of Si on rice growth in particular, are largely attributable to the characteristics of a silica gel that is accumulated on the epidermal tissues in rice. These effects are expressed most clearly under high-density cultivation systems with heavy applications of nitrogen. Si is therefore recognized now as an ''agronomically essential element'' in Japan.Recently, Si has become globally important because it generates resistance in many plants to diseases and pests, and may contribute to reduced rates of application of pesticides and fungicides. Silicon is also now considered as an environment-friendly element. The achievements of Si research in Japan are introduced in this book, in relation to soils, fertilizers and plant nutrition.

Ethnic Relations and Minority Policies in Contemporary China
With over 100 million people belonging to minorities, ethnic relations is a major issue for China. This book is the first on this subject in English by scholars who are based in China, both authors being members of the Hui minority, and both having extensive experience of researching Chinese minorities. The book provides a comprehensive survey of the subject: it presents an overview of ethnic minorities in China and their development historically, examines policies and administrative systems concerning minorities, including language and education policies, considers current changes which affect minorities, including recent large scale migration, and discusses current debates on ethnic policies, assessing proposals for a new approach.

Three Dimensional Space-Time Analysis Theory of Geotechnical Seismic Engineering
Written by respected experts, this book presents essential findings on the Wenchuan earthquake. It establishes a series of time-frequency analysis methods, and subsequently applies them to the layered site, slope, and earth-retaining wall. Further, it examines various cases and their solutions, and shares the results of numerous shaking-table tests and numerical simulations. As such, it is a valuable resource for researchers and engineers in the fields of geotechnical engineering and anti-seismic engineering.

The Sublime Continuum Super-Commentary (theg pa chen po rgyud bla ma`i tikka) with the Sublime Continuum Treatise Commentary (Mahayanottaratantra
The original Sublime Continuum Treatise Commentary was written by Aryasa?ga, as inspired by the bodhisattva, Maitreyanatha, around 400 CE, in North India. It was subsequently elucidated frequently in India and Tibet. Here, it is introduced and presented in an original translation from Sanskrit and Tibetan, with the translation of a detailed Tibetan Super-Commentary by Gyaltsap Darma Rinchen (1364-1432 CE), whose work is considered to be authentically inspired by his teacher, the widely acclaimed Tibetan philosophical genius, Tsong Khapa (1357-1419 CE).The Buddhist Centrist teaching of emptiness, or selflessness, is foundational in all forms of Buddhist thought and education. In contemporary scholarship, its critical, negational impact is widely misunderstood as a form of nihilism, or at least as a radical skepticism. This is unsurprising, as indeed it is a negation of any intrinsic reality in any persons or things. However, Buddhist philosophers from Nagarjuna on have argued that this negation of intrinsic reality powerfully affirms the supreme importance and value of relative realities, as elusive and sometimes even illusory as they may be.Such affirmation of relative reality-filled as it is with sensitive beings, usually caught in suffering due to their ignorance of their natural freedom and their frustrating struggles with the overwhelming "otherness" of the universe of beings and things-is the bottom line of the theory of emptiness. In the Super-Commentary, Gyaltsap Darma Rinchen elucidates in great detail this supremely positive theory of the "buddha-nature," showing how it provides the meaning and value of the liberated life, so powerfully enabled by the wisdom of emptiness. Herein, Marty Bo Jiang, in his clear presentation and original translation, completes the historic project of presenting these works in both English and Chinese translations, in parallel publications.

Hvordan bruke teori?: nyttige verktøy i kvalitativ analyse
Håkon Leiulfsrud, Tidsskrift for samfunnsforskning
