The European Union and Central and Eastern Europe
Susan Senior Nello, Karen E. Smith
First published in 1998, this volume's approach is intended to be positive rather than normative and to identify criteria for evaluating which countries should join and the probable consequences of EU enlargement, along with the effects of temporary exclusion from the EU. It is a revised and enlarged version of a background paper first presented at the May 1997 meeting of the European University Institute Working Group on Eastern Enlargement, and published as a European University Institute working paper. Enlargement is widely considered to be the way to spread stability, prosperity and security eastward, and has been agreed to by the Union for that end. Susan Senior Nello is responsible for the economic content of this book, with Karen Smith heading the political and institutional aspects.

Shades of Wrath
Karen Rose Smith
Between her booming business, her family, and her work rescuing stray animals, home stager Caprice De Luca s life is packed. But when a murder unsettles peaceful Kismet, Pennsylvania, she adds amateur sleuth to her resume. "" Thanks to a wealthy patron, Kismet s women s shelter, Sunshine Tomorrow, has inherited a run-down mansion. Now the shelter s director, Wendy Newcomb, wants Caprice s decorating expertise. Caprice is happy to help, but when she glimpses a few heated encounters between Wendy and some locals, she fears that Wendy may be in need of protection herself. When Wendy is found dead inside the old house, Caprice is compelled to poke around in her affairs and discovers she had her share of enemies. Now, with countless clients, a TV gig that could make her a household name, and rumors of a marriage proposal on its way, Caprice must find time to design an investigation that will lure a crafty killer into the wide open before someone else winds up in a state of permanent disrepair "

Modern Studies in Property Law, Volume 10
This book contains a collection of papers presented at the Twelfth Biennial Modern Studies in Property Law Conference held at University College London in April 2018. The conference and its published proceedings are an established forum for property lawyers from around the world to showcase the latest research. This collection includes a keynote address by Dame Elizabeth Gloster, former Vice President of the Court of Appeal (Civil Division), on technology in property law. It also includes plenary addresses by Professor Henry Smith on the architecture of property law and the challenge of compiling the American Law Institute's Fourth Restatement of Property, and by Her Honour Judge Karen Walden-Smith on the role of the first instance judge in property cases. Sixteen further chapters address a wide range of issues, including the theory and taxonomy of land law, the re-evaluation of land obligations, the nature and operation of equitable property rights and shares, the role of property in commerce, comparative approaches to leases and trusts, and contemporary issues in land registration. Collectively, the chapters demonstrate the vibrancy, diversity and importance of property law and of current research in the subject.

DIY Citizenship
How social media and DIY communities have enabled new forms of political participation that emphasize doing and making rather than passive consumption.Today, DIY-do-it-yourself-describes more than self-taught carpentry. Social media enables DIY citizens to organize and protest in new ways (as in Egypt's "Twitter revolution" of 2011) and to repurpose corporate content (or create new user-generated content) in order to offer political counternarratives. This book examines the usefulness and limits of DIY citizenship, exploring the diverse forms of political participation and "critical making" that have emerged in recent years. The authors and artists in this collection describe DIY citizens whose activities range from activist fan blogging and video production to knitting and the creation of community gardens.Contributors examine DIY activism, describing new modes of civic engagement that include Harry Potter fan activism and the activities of the Yes Men. They consider DIY making in learning, culture, hacking, and the arts, including do-it-yourself media production and collaborative documentary making. They discuss DIY and design and how citizens can unlock the black box of technological infrastructures to engage and innovate open and participatory critical making. And they explore DIY and media, describing activists' efforts to remake and reimagine media and the public sphere. As these chapters make clear, DIY is characterized by its emphasis on "doing" and making rather than passive consumption. DIY citizens assume active roles as interventionists, makers, hackers, modders, and tinkerers, in pursuit of new forms of engaged and participatory democracy.ContributorsMike Ananny, Chris Atton, Alexandra Bal, Megan Boler, Catherine Burwell, Red Chidgey, Andrew Clement, Negin Dahya, Suzanne de Castell, Carl DiSalvo, Kevin Driscoll, Christina Dunbar-Hester, Joseph Ferenbok, Stephanie Fisher, Miki Foster, Stephen Gilbert, Henry Jenkins, Jennifer Jenson, Yasmin B.
