The new knowledge has brought many practical benefits, including improvements in human health and prosperity. At the same time, it has led to ethical debates and controversy over issues such as genetic testing for inherited diseases, the balancing of environmental risks with benefits, genetic modification of crops and animals, the use of DNA fingerprinting in court cases, and the possibility of human reproductive cloning. These are only a few of the biology-based issues that we have to grapple with today. The successful application of the new knowledge will require many difficult decisions for us as citizens. A basic understanding of cell biology is needed if these decisions are to be intelligent ones. Our original purpose in writing this book was to provide a straightfor ward explanation of the workings of a living cell. By "workings," we mean principally the way in which the molecules of the cell-especially the pro tein, DNA, and RNA molecules-cooperate to create a system that feeds, moves, grows, divides, and responds to stimuli-one, in short, that is alive. By "straightforward," we mean an account that can be easily understood by a reader approaching modern biology for the first time. The need for a short, clear account of the essentials of cell biology became apparent to us while we were writing Molecular Biology of the Cell (MBOC), which is now in its fourth edition. MBOC is a large book aimed at advanced undergraduates and graduate students specializing in the life sciences or medicine. Many students and educated lay people who require an introductory account of cell biology would find this text too detailed for their needs. Essential Cell Biology (ECB), in contrast, is designed to provide the fundamentals of cell biology that are required by anyone to understand the biomedical, as well as the broader biological issues that affect our lives. ECB is as short and simple as we can make it, and we have reduced technical vocabulary to a minimum. This study explores an aspect of Scotland's literary history - the influence of Viking culture on modern Scottish literature. It illustrates, firstly, how the Viking invasions and settlements have made a lasting impact on the history, languages and cultures of Scotland and how, from the very beginning, Scotsmen made a distinct and important contribution to the dissemination of Old Norse culture in Britain and played a significant role in the creation of the notion of a Norse ethos. Secondly, the book illustrates in detail how a consciousness of this Norse heritage has influenced nine major Scottish writers of this century: Hugh Mac Diarmid, Lewis Grassic Gibbon, Neil Gunn, John Buchan, Naomi Mitchison, David Lindsay, Eric Linklater, Edwin Muir and George Mackay Brown. It throws light on aspects of Scottish identity and literary trends, especially in the period of the Scottish Renaissance 1920-50. The Glorious Revolution of 1688-9 transformed the role of parliament in Britain and its empire. Large numbers of statutes resulted, with most concerning economic activity. She is renowned as one of the greatest American chefs and as an African-American woman who almost single handedly revived a forgotten world of refined Southern cooking. Another celebrated American chef, James Beard, remarked: Edna Lewis makes me want to go right into the kitchen and start cooking. Lewis won many industry awards and was often referred to as the Grande Dame of Southern Cooking and the South s answer to Julia Child. Lewis (1916-2006) also had a remarkable life story. She was born and grew up in rural Virginia in an area called Freetown. She learned to cook from an extended family that included grandparents who had been enslaved. The Edna Lewis Cookbook, Lewis s first book, published in 1972, contains over 100 recipes, arranged in menu form and organized according to the season of the year: Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Christmas. With its focus mostly although not exclusively on Southern food, it began the revival of true Southern cooking.
