The Culture of Sports in the Harlem Renaissance

The Culture of Sports in the Harlem Renaissance

    Daniel Anderson

During the African American cultural resurgence of the 1920s and 1930s, professional athletes shared the spotlight with artists and intellectuals. Negro League baseball teams played in New York City's major-league stadiums and basketball clubs shared the bill with jazz bands at late night casinos. Yet sports remain conspicuously absent from much of the literature on the popular culture of the Harlem Renaissance. Although the black intelligentsia largely dismissed the popularity of sports, the press celebrated athletics as a means to participate in the debates of the day. A few prominent writers, such as Claude McKay and James Weldon Johnson, used sports in distinctive ways to communicate their vision of the Renaissance. Meanwhile, the writers of the Harlem press promoted sports with community consciousness, insightful analysis and a playful love of language, and argued for their importance in the fight for racial equality.

    Friend & Foe

    Friend & Foe

    Shirley McKay

St Andrews, 1583. The young king James VI is confined at Falkland palace, plotting his escape. Dissension rages between Kirk and Crown, the king and his 'lord enterprisers', and between the separate factions of the church. In St Andrews Castle, a bishop in decline plays out his darkest fantasies, while Hew and his friend Giles investigate the true source of his sickness, uncovering corruption at its heart. The death of a young soldier, implicating Hew's sister and Giles's wife Meg, leads Hew to an astonishing discovery, and towards his blackest hour, his fortunes inextricable from those of James himself. Real historical figures interwoven in this fantastical tale are James VI, the bastard son of James V, spymaster Sir Francis Walsingham and Alison Pearson who was executed for witchcraft in 1588.

1587. Three years after his enforced departure to London, Hew is reconciled with King James VI and recalled to Scotland. He elopes to St Andrews with a young Englishwoman. The death of Mary, Queen of Scots has unleashed a wave of anti-English sentiment among the Scottish people, and fear and confusion in the king himself. James will grant his blessing to their controversial marriage on the condition that Hew discovers what lies behind a painting cunningly contrived to prick the young king's conscience - an anamorphic death's-head with his mother's face. Meanwhile in St Andrews, the death of a painter is troubling to Giles Locke, and the English Frances, struggling to adapt to a foreign town and culture, helps Hew find the link among the artists and intriguers of opposing courts, a quest for love - and life - requiring all his skills.

Reconsidering the Emergence of the Gay Novel in English and German

Reconsidering the Emergence of the Gay Novel in English and German

    James P. Wilper

In Reconsidering the Emergence of the Gay Novel in English and German, James P. Wilper examines a key moment in the development of the modern gay novel by analyzing four novels by German, British, and American writers. Wilper studies how the texts are influenced by and respond and react to four schools of thought regarding male homosexuality in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The first is legal codes criminalizing sex acts between men and the religious doctrine that informs them. The second is the ancient Greek erotic philosophy, in which a revival of interest took place in the late nineteenth century. The third is sexual science (or "sexology"), which offered various medical and psychological explanations for same-sex desire and was employed variously to defend, as well as to attempt to cure, this ""perversion."" And fourth, in the wake of the scandal caused by his trials and conviction for ""gross indecency,"" Oscar Wilde became associated with a homosexual stereotype based on ""unmanly"" behavior. Wilper analyzes the four novels-Thomas Mann's Death in Venice, E. M. Forster's Maurice, Edward Prime-Stevenson's Imre: A Memorandum, and John Henry Mackay's The Hustler-in relation to these schools of thought, and focuses on the exchange and cross-cultural influence between linguistic and cultural contexts on the subject of love and desire between men.

    Dear Mr Murray

    Dear Mr Murray

    David McClay

The publishing house of John Murray was founded in Fleet Street in 1768 and remained a family firm over seven generations. Published to coincide with this 'remarkable achievement' and in the anniversary year, Dear Mr Murray is a collection of some of the best letters from the hundreds of thousands held in the John Murray Archive. They reveal not only the story of some of the most interesting and influential books in history but also the remarkable friendships - as well as occasional animosities - between author and publisher, as well as readers, editors, printers and illustrators.Despite the incredible number of letters that were retained by the Murray family, some failed to arrive, others were delayed and some barely survived, but longevity added to the reputation and fame of John Murray and a correspondent in Canada who addressed his letter merely to 'John Murray, The World-wide famous Book & Publishing House, London, England' as early as 1932 could be confident that his letter would arrive.Intended to entertain and inspire, and spanning more than two hundred years, Dear Mr Murray is full of literary history and curiosities: from Charles Darwin's response to the negative reviews of On the Origin of Species to Adrian Conan Doyle challenging Harold Nicolson to a duel for insulting his father in the press; from David Livingstone's displeasure at the proposed drawing of a lion to represent his near-death encounter in Missionary Travels to William Makepeace Thackeray apologising for his drunken behaviour; from Byron berating John Murray for being fooled by his girlfriend's forgery of his signature to the poet James Hogg so desperate for money that he claims he won't be able to afford a Christmas goose; and from Jane Austen expressing concern about printing delays to Patrick Leigh Fermor beseeching Jock Murray not to visit him until he'd completed A Time of Gifts. Complemented by illustrations and reproductions of letters and envelopes, this is the perfect gift for book lovers everywhere.

    You're All Alone

    You're All Alone

    Fritz Leiber

The hero of the novel is a fellow named Carr Mackay, who works at a routine job for an employment company in Chicago. Until one day, he spies a frightened young woman who tells him that he is one of the few who have "become awake" but that he must beware of "them". "They" will kill him if he isn't careful. Gradually, Carr realizes that the people around him-- clients, fellow workers, strangers, his girl friend-- are behaving in a mechanical, robotic, preprogrammed manner and that they frequently interact with people who aren't there. The city of Chicago has become a gigantic, self-operating machine. Carr reconnects with the girl (she has left him a note). But it turns out that for a time, she is reluctant to discuss "the problem" of the city-- she only wishes to deny that it exists for as long as possible. But eventually, Carr and the girl, Jane Gregg, are forced to contend with two deadly gangs who are awake and prowling the streets of Chicago. The first is a treacherous crew headed by a businesslike blond woman. They are accompanied by a vicious, giant hound. James Cawthorn and Michael Moorcock (1988) note: "Leiber adds a mythological touch by having one of the blond's henchmen lose a hand to the beast, echoing the fate of Tyr when he bound the wolf Fenrir" (148). The second gang is a quartet of black-suited killers wearing snap-brim hats. They are feared even by the first gang. When Carr first sees them carrying what he thinks is a store mannikin, he almost laughs out loud. But his amusement quickly turns to horror: He watched until they were well past him. Almost regretfully, he turned away toward the tie counter. But just then, the rigid arm of the mannequin unfolded and dropped down slackly, and the head fell back and fixed on him a sick, doomed stare. (38) Leiber wrote this novel during his "Chicago days," and so he shows a feel for the city-- its statues, fountains, streets, bridges, libraries, museums, apartments, stores, houses, bars, and waterfront. He cranks up the suspense and develops a romance and brings things to a satisfactory (if somewhat abrupt) conclusion. It should be noted that no character in the novel at any time ever entertains the notion of leaving Chicago. The Windy City has become a kind of self-contained microcosm.
