Once Upon a More Enlightened Time - More Politically Correct Bedtime Stories
Following the international best-seller Politically Correct Bedtime Stories comes Once Upon a More Enlightened Time, a new collection of nurturing and correct stories for pre-adults. These tales by James Finn Garner attempt to purge the cultural biases, sexism, lookism, speciesism, and other insidious -isms from the “classic” bedtime stories that have been handed down from one social power structure to another. A better world starts with better bedtime stories – and these stories made the New York Times best-seller list. From the Little Mer-Persun protecting her unique evolutionary niche, to Hansel and Gretel becoming eco-terrorists to defend their forest home, these recast tales should inspire a new generation of right-thinking people to make the world a better place for persuns, non-persuns, animals, pixies, and talking mirrors of all backgrounds. As a bonus, this new electronic version also contains previously unpublished material: a full-length PC novella version of “Pinocchio” that was excised from the original edition, and the second chapter of James Finn Garner’s latest work, Honk Honk, My Darling: A Rex Koko, Private Clown Mystery.

Peter Pan

Howard Frank Mosher and the Classics
This book draws connections between Vermont author Howard Frank Mosher and works of classic American literature. Chapter I explores the horrors of the Civil War as conveyed in Mosher's Walking to Gatlinburg and Stephen Crane's The Red Badge of Courage. Major characters escape the battlefield and then feel a need to redeem themselves for what could be a cowardly act. Chapter II analyses how Mosher and three classic authors explore the physical and moral dangers of industrialisation, especially women's safety. Chapter III compares Mosher's Walking to Gatlinburg to Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress in terms of the quest for Heaven. In Chapter IV, Melville's novels are used to address evil as it appears in Mosher's Disappearances.Chapter V explores black men with white women in Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird and Mosher's A Stranger in the Kingdom. Humour is at the core of Chapter VI, comparing Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn to Mosher's The True Account. In Chapter VII, the disappearing wilderness is the issue in Faulkner's Go Down, Moses and several of Mosher's works. Chapter VIII offers romantic love as a shield against other human beings. A conclusion draws on Steinbeck, Twain and Mosher to elaborate on how one should explore as much of the world as possible.

West with the Rise
The first book to follow a fly-fishing trip from coast to coast, West with the Rise is James Barilla's account of a solitary journey that begins in New England and ends in Northern California, with little more to keep him company than a secondhand pickup bought just for the trip, a pair of Nikes he cannot seem to keep dry (they're literally decomposing before his eyes), and the graphite stick and reel that the fly fisher reaches for before he has even fully awoken. The progression from the spring creeks of the East to the big sky country and its nearly mythic trout streams represents more than a search for better fishing. It marks for Barilla the transition from the Massachusetts of his childhood to the West that has become his home as an adult.Woven into his days on the streams are his thoughts of the family he and his wife are planning. More than a preoccupation, it is to some extent the very inspiration for the trip itself. The couple's years-long attempt to have a child has brought them to fertility specialists, and the options they offer, such as in vitro fertilization, Barilla explains with the same attention to detail with which he describes the water's clarity and the coolness of a newfound fishing ground. The question is not only one of successful treatment but of exactly why Barilla should desire a child and what he as a father would have to offer. It is the streams that have run through his entire life-""We are mostly water,"" he reminds us-to which Barilla now turns for answers. At times no one would mistake this world for that of Huck Finn. Barilla drives past strip malls, falls asleep to Dirty Harry playing on his motel room television, and reads in a trout magazine of a particular stream that is no longer what it once was, thanks to urban sprawl-to which one fly shop proprietor adds, ""No place is what it was.""It is almost with a sense of relief, then, that we reach so many settings of uncommon beauty-from Yellow Breeches Creek in Pennsylvania to the grand Deschutes River in Oregon-each with a singular fishing experience to offer. For Barilla this journey is a chance to reflect on his life as an angler but also on his, at turns frustrating and deeply rewarding, relationship with the outdoors and its unending capacity to surprise and instruct.
