Stand and Deliver! - A History of Highway Robbery
Why is the highwayman largely perceived as a romantic, glamorous and gallant figure? How is it that men who were really nothing more than bandits, who were often gratuitously violent, sometimes murderers and rapists as well, have become the swashbuckling heroes of history? To put their roles in context, the book probes into the economic, social and technological factors that at certain times made highway robbery highly lucrative and which help to explain why some of its exponents eventually disappeared from the scene. Finally, the legacy of the highwaymen on pub signs, in films and in fiction is discussed. Informative, stimulating and entertaining, from the pen of a true enthusiast, this book will appeal to anyone interested in the dramatic, murky underworld of history.

Mostly Modern
Renowned art historian/critic of modern art, Joseph Masheck was so encouraged to be a generalist by his mentor, the great architectural historian Rudolf Wittkower, that he answers to a specialty of "mostly modern." This book, a compilation of essays by colleagues near and far, has grown out of a symposium organised at Hofstra for his seventieth birthday. Appealing to "mostly modern" taste, they range over five categories: critical thought (Kant, Ruskin, Cezanne); architecture in cultural space (earliest Renaissance in Britain, Le Corbusier, the architectural imagination of Robbe-Grillet); Central and East European modernism (Latvian art, Kirchner, El Lissitzky); postwar modernism (indeterminacy in music and painting, drawing on a Mies van der Rohe wall, later critical legacy of Malevich's Black Square); and style and habitus (male 'bohemianism' in 16th-century Holland, feminist art-student 'hijinks' in turn of the century Edinburgh, and a piece by Masheck on the 1950s modernist topos of 'bad' barbarian copies of classical coins having "abstract" formal conviction). Each essay is prefaced by Masheck, so that the "mostly modern" symposium may continue to invite ongoing debate. Contents of the book and contributors: Preface: Joseph Masheck Reintroducing Joseph Masheck: Different Forms of Formalism and the Geometry of Humanism David L. Craven Critical Thought: 1. Pavlov's Dog
The only acting credit on the back of Stan Pavlov's headshot is "appeared in court". But one day, his life takes an unexpected change - for the worse - when his beloved Dog inadvertently gets cast in the commercial Stan was auditioning for. Pavlov's Dog moves to L.A. and ascends to stardom: The Royal Shakespeare Company, an animated series, a late-night talk show. Stan quits. He has flushed acting out of his system, until...The Dog, sick and broke, needs money for an operation (having blown all his on chew toys and bitches). To raise cash, Stan grudgingly agrees to become a prime-time game-show host. Stan finds that everything he ever wanted - money, fame, attention - is not actually what he really wanted. Trashing hotel rooms, robbing banks, punching fans who don't want to take his picture can't erase the simple truth: there is no loneliness quite as profound as a man separated from his dog. David Kurman's brilliant social satire is a hilarious look at the absurdity and fickleness of modern fame.

D.L.P Yali-Manisi: Vol 2: Opland collection of Xhosa Literature
David Livingstone Phakamile Yali-Manisi (1926-99) was a Thembu imbongi, the most powerful exponent of the art of praise poetry in the Xhosa language, in the second half of the twentieth century. His literary career, however, was blighted by circumstances beyond his control, and he died in total obscurity. Manisi was obliged to seek his audiences throughout the lifetime of South Africa's reviled policy of apartheid, and the poet's reputation, initially full of promise, waned as a consequence. He was a lifelong supporter of Nelson Mandela and the author of the earliest poem in praise of Mandela (1954), but he was never able to fulfil his ambition of performing a poem in honour of Mandela in a liberated South Africa.Manisi exhibited a marked penchant for extending the panegyric mode of the imbongi into explicit narrative; he also displayed an astonishing capacity to compose poetry in the act of performance. This volume presents eight of his narrative poems in isiXhosa and in English translation. Four of them are drawn from his earliest published books, together with the complete text of his epic poem on the War of Mlanjeni, published in 1983; also included are three remarkable spontaneous poems produced with little forethought. The poems address events in the first eighty years of the nineteenth century, and feature blunt assessments of figures such as Ntsikana, Ngqika, Nonesi, Sandile, Sir Harry Smith, Nongqawuse and Sir George Grey. David Yali-Manisi ardently anticipated the restoration of black control under those imprisoned on Robben Island, fighters for liberty quite as heroic as the crane-feathered warriors of the nineteenth century. His poetry, both written and performed, plumbed the past to inspire resistance to present injustices.

The Economics of Population

The economics of population has a long and controversial history as well as an exciting present. Vociferous popular debate, public policy, and population economics have unduly influenced one another: public debate and policy affect the erection of economists' conclusions just as the results of economists' studies influence debate and popular thought. The words and theories of John Maynard Keynes, Thomas R. Malthus, John Stuart Mill, and Friedrich Engels come to mind immediately. However, many writings on population economics had little or no influence on public thought at the time they were written, although they may be seen as "correct" in light of modern developments. In fact, many of the ideas contained in these writings were publicly debated but then ignored for a long time, reappearing much later or reinvented independently.

The Economics of Population, edited by Julian L. Simon, traces the history of population economics. This is a century-spanning collection of essays from foremost influential economic theorists, arranged to illustrate thought development and its numerous reversals. The first section includes essays from Joseph J. Spengler, John Graunt, William Petty, Thomas R. Malthus, William Godwin, and David Ricardo. Theorists such as Alexander Everett, William Peterson, Simon Gray, Henry C. Carey, John Stuart Mill, Friedrich Engels, Henry George, and Charles Fourier are the subject of the volume's second section. Finally, Simon covers the effect of population density and cities on productivity, and the effect of density on agricultural practices and natural resources. Essays from this section include John Maynard Keynes' "Is Britain Overpopulated?" and "The Economic Consequences of Peace" as well as selections from Lionel Robbins, George Simmel, and Alvin H. Hansen.

Simon's long-term focus reflects the evolution of population movements. He does not restrict himself to writings that have been important in the historical chain of intellectual influence. Rather, he guides us to key works which shed light on the intellectual history of population economics. Simon includes some essays that, while greatly influential, can also be seen as fundamentally wrong in light of later work. As such, The Economics of Population will be of great value to political economists, sociologists of knowledge, and historians of ideas.

Colonial Genocide in Indigenous North America
This important collection of essays expands the geographic, demographic, and analytic scope of the term genocide to encompass the effects of colonialism and settler colonialism in North America. Colonists made multiple and interconnected attempts to destroy Indigenous peoples as groups. The contributors examine these efforts through the lens of genocide. Considering some of the most destructive aspects of the colonization and subsequent settlement of North America, several essays address Indigenous boarding school systems imposed by both the Canadian and U.S. governments in attempts to "civilize" or "assimilate" Indigenous children. Contributors examine some of the most egregious assaults on Indigenous peoples and the natural environment, including massacres, land appropriation, the spread of disease, the near-extinction of the buffalo, and forced political restructuring of Indigenous communities. Assessing the record of these appalling events, the contributors maintain that North Americans must reckon with colonial and settler colonial attempts to annihilate Indigenous peoples.Contributors.
