Molecular Biology of the Cell
As the amount of information in biology expands dramatically, it becomes increasingly important for textbooks to distill the vast amount of scientific knowledge into concise principles and enduring concepts. As with previous editions, Molecular Biology of the Cell, Sixth Edition accomplishes this goal with clear writing and beautiful illustrations. The Sixth Edition has been extensively revised and updated with the latest research in the field of cell biology, and it provides an exceptional framework for teaching and learning. The entire illustration program has been greatly enhanced.Protein structures better illustrate structure-function relationships, icons are simpler and more consistent within and between chapters, and micrographs have been refreshed and updated with newer, clearer, or better images. As a new feature, each chapter now contains intriguing openended questions highlighting "What We Don't Know," introducing students to challenging areas of future research. Updated end-of-chapter problems reflect new research discussed in the text, and these problems have been expanded to all chapters by adding questions on developmental biology, tissues and stem cells, pathogens, and the immune system.

Molecular biology of the cell
Now generously illustrated in full color and featuring many new panels, drawings, and diagrams, the Third Edition is completely reorganized to reflect new discoveries, new emphases, and new approaches. It covers major advances in signal transduction, intracellular protein sorting, gene regulation, control of cell division, and developmental biology. The biology of plants and the nervous system are integrated into the main text. The Third Edition also extensively updates coverage of immunology and cancer, and adds two new chapters that examine recombinant DNA techniques and proteins as machines.

Essential Cell Biology : Second Edition
The new knowledge has brought many practical benefits, including improvements in human health and prosperity. At the same time, it has led to ethical debates and controversy over issues such as genetic testing for inherited diseases, the balancing of environmental risks with benefits, genetic modification of crops and animals, the use of DNA fingerprinting in court cases, and the possibility of human reproductive cloning. These are only a few of the biology-based issues that we have to grapple with today. The successful application of the new knowledge will require many difficult decisions for us as citizens. A basic understanding of cell biology is needed if these decisions are to be intelligent ones. Our original purpose in writing this book was to provide a straightfor ward explanation of the workings of a living cell. By "workings," we mean principally the way in which the molecules of the cell-especially the pro tein, DNA, and RNA molecules-cooperate to create a system that feeds, moves, grows, divides, and responds to stimuli-one, in short, that is alive. By "straightforward," we mean an account that can be easily understood by a reader approaching modern biology for the first time. The need for a short, clear account of the essentials of cell biology became apparent to us while we were writing Molecular Biology of the Cell (MBOC), which is now in its fourth edition. MBOC is a large book aimed at advanced undergraduates and graduate students specializing in the life sciences or medicine. Many students and educated lay people who require an introductory account of cell biology would find this text too detailed for their needs. Essential Cell Biology (ECB), in contrast, is designed to provide the fundamentals of cell biology that are required by anyone to understand the biomedical, as well as the broader biological issues that affect our lives. ECB is as short and simple as we can make it, and we have reduced technical vocabulary to a minimum. In this second edition, we have brought the book completely up to date, with a new emphasis on genomes. including an overview of the human genome sequence and a new chapter on How Genes and Genomes Evolve, In response to requests from many....

Science literacy for the twenty-first century
This outstanding collection of essays is authored by eminent scientists and science educators, including Bruce Alberts, Howard Gardner, Margaret Geller, Stephen Jay Gould, George A. Keyworth, Lawrence M. Krauss, Leon Lederman, Sheila Tobias, and James Trefil. It provides suggestions for enhancing science education in the United States and improving the standards of scientific literacy throughout the world. If current trends continue, in the 21st century, new scientific information will probably outpace the level of science education of most of the world's citizens. Nonetheless, all citizens in this increasingly interdependent global community will be called on to face many daunting questions that this knowledge will raise, ranging from the sustainability of our global environment to new moral dilemmas created by such technologies as cloning and recombinant gene therapy. As the world leader in science and technology, the United States, now more than ever, must raise the level of scientific literacy among its citizens to ensure that wise and responsible decisions about the uses and possible misuses of science are made.Unfortunately, our educational system is now suffering from a shortage of science teachers, and many of those already teaching science need to be better qualified. Furthermore, our science curriculum must be designed to teach our children to be conversant with and to think critically about the complex scientific issues they will face as adults. Finally, our high schools need to be in a position to offer all students a world-class science foundation, which prepares them to pursue scientific training at the university level if they so choose.

Legacy of Empire
The University of Alberta Libraries houses one of the most outstanding collections of Austrian, Habsburg and Central European materials in North America. This unique strength has at its heart the acquisition of two major Austrian collections: the famous "Priesterseminar" library of the Archbishop of Salzburg, purchased in 1965, and the library of Viennese Juridisch-Politische Leseverin, purchased in 1969. The Salzburg Collection, one of the most important collections in Canada for Central European law studies, consists of the original law collection of the Seminary library of the Archbishop of Salzburg. The Priesterseminar Library has its origins in the Roman Catholic Ecumenical Council of Trent (1545-1563), at which the Catholic Church affirmed and clearly defined its dogmas in the face of the Protestant challenge. This catalogue, published to accompany a 2008 exhibit at the University of Alberta's Bruce Peel Special Collections Library, provides a glimpse into the riches of these two collections.

In Vogue
In Vogue is a fascinating look at the history of the world's most influential magazine. The complete compendium is illustrated with hundreds of covers and archival interiors of past Vogue editions, featuring the work of some of the twentieth century's most respected artists, cover illustrators, and photographers--from Edward Steichen, Toni Frissell, and Erwin Blumenfeld to Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, David Bailey, Helmut Newton, Annie Leibovitz, Mario Testino, Steven Klein, Bruce Webber, and Herb Ritts. In 1909, an entrepreneurial New Yorker named Conde Nast took charge of a struggling society journal and transformed it into the most glamorous fashion magazine of the twentieth century. In Vogue traces the history, development and influence of this media colossus--from its beginning as a social gazette in the late nineteenth century, to the exploration of modern fashion photography and new visuals in the mid-twentieth century, to its status as the top style magazine today. The book explains the makings of the magazine--from runways, to editorial meetings, to the pages of Vogue. The thoroughly researched story incorporates first-person accounts, interviews with editors and photographers, and excerpts from stories written in the magazine by many world-renowned writers, including Truman Capote, Aldous Huxley, Richard Burton, Federico Fellini, and Marcello Mastroianni. Unparalleled in its scope and exceptionally illustrated, In Vogue is sure to be among the most important publications on the subjects of culture, art, fashion, photography, and media.

Internal Gravity Waves
The study of internal gravity waves provides many challenges: they move along interfaces as well as in fully three-dimensional space, at relatively fast temporal and small spatial scales, making them difficult to observe and resolve in weather and climate models. Solving the equations describing their evolution poses various mathematical challenges associated with singular boundary value problems and large amplitude dynamics. This book provides the first comprehensive treatment of the theory for small and large amplitude internal gravity waves. Over 120 schematics, numerical simulations and laboratory images illustrate the theory and mathematical techniques, and 130 exercises enable the reader to apply their understanding of the theory. This is an invaluable single resource for academic researchers and graduate students studying the motion of waves within the atmosphere and ocean, and also mathematicians, physicists and engineers interested in the properties of propagating, growing and breaking waves.
