Viliam Malik 1912-2012
This book is a biography of Viliam Malik, one of the most important representatives of modern photography in Slovakia in the 1930s and 1940s. Like most amateur photographers, Malik shot a wide range of subjects; however from the very beginning he was attracted to live documentary photography. He was not the only representative of modern photojournalism in Slovakia, but his thematic universality stands out in comparison with his colleagues. As an existentially open and unbiased photographer and documentarian, he had an understanding for human situations and he knew how to capture the important aspects of social processes. His images retain their attractiveness even to this day due to the fact that they are devoid of the ephemeral effects that were typical at the time. A graphical documentation of this important photographer, this book showcases Viliam Malik s transitions from static photography to modern dynamic reportage and how, as an artist, he resisted bias and knew how to assess situations with human sympathy but also impartiality as if from a timeless perspective."

Matejka
The photographic work of Ivan Matejka is connected with several paradoxes. He possessed a genetically-determined head start compared to other photographers - blessed with distinctive talent, he created his first noteworthy shots at the age of sixteen. It seemed that he took off as a photographer at full speed, as his photographs were quickly exhibited, published and from time to time even awarded. However, he remains a little-known photographer. He has only had two smaller solo exhibitions, and sporadically participates in cultural life; in fact, almost no one has seen his work from the past two decades. Ivan Matejka perceives the world as "chaotic and messy." However, when it comes to photography, he thinks that "this mess must be removed. In a photographic picture, there must be order like the gears in a watch..." And so, for Matejka, roses bloom even in a junkyard. One simply has to be close enough, and supremely alert in order to observe the world opening up for us in countless new views.

Federal participation, Alaska purchase centennial celebration, 1967
The medieval history of the Romanians in the Hungarian kingdom still represents one of the most delicate subjects in European history. This book is the product of more than thirty years of research, and thus provides new and balanced insights into that history, revealing both the rise and the decline of communities and individuals, as well as the diversity of these borderlands of Christian Europe.

Elements in Politics and Society in Southeast Asia
Civil-Military Relations in Southeast Asia reviews the historical origins, contemporary patterns, and emerging changes in civil-military relations in Southeast Asia from colonial times until today. It analyzes what types of military organizations emerged in the late colonial period and the impact of colonial legacies and the Japanese occupation in World War II on the formation of national armies and their role in processes of achieving independence. It analyzes the long term trajectories and recent changes of professional, revolutionary, praetorian and neo-patrimonial civil-military relations in the region. Finally, it analyzes military roles in state- and nation-building; political domination; revolutions and regime transitions; and military entrepreneurship.

Russia, the West and Arctic Security
Russia has recently undertaken military exercises in the Arctic, demonstrating that it values its strategic position in this region, which may be an important future source of oil and gas. Given Russia's recent actions in Ukraine and Crimea the question arises as to how the West should respond, or prepare itself to respond, to any similar Russian actions in the Arctic. This book examines Russia's strategic interests in the Arctic, discusses why Russia is compelled to assert itself in the region, and explores the different possible Western responses. The book includes an assessment of China's and other Asian states' interests in the Arctic, considers the international legal position, and debates whether a robust or a more conciliatory response from the West is likely to be more effective.

Cambridge Library Collection - Archaeology
The Hungarian-born archaeologist Marc Aurel Stein (1862-1943) is probably best remembered today for his explorations in Chinese Turkestan, and especially his discovery of the Buddhist treasure of Dunhuang, described in his earlier works, Sand-Buried Ruins of Khotan and Ruins of Desert Cathay (also reissued in this series). Stein was equally interested in the territory north-west of the North-West Frontier, and in this highly illustrated 1929 work he describes an expedition to survey the route of Alexander the Great's invasion of India in 326 BCE. Having long been intrigued by 'that comparatively small area to the west of the Indus which Alexander's march of conquest towards India for a brief span of time illuminates as it were with the light of a meteor', and by archaeological remains showing a blend of Hellenistic and Buddhist art, Stein offers a fascinating account of an ancient clash of civilisations.

Early Ethical Writings of Aurel Kolnai
This title was first published in 2002: Kolnai's later work in moral philosophy is well-known, and interest in it continues to grow, but his dissertation, Ethical Value and Reality, has received little attention - although Kolnai himself said that it contains the germs of nearly all his subsequent thought. This first English translation of the dissertation and of two related papers from the same period will enable the English-speaking reader to explore Kolnai's ethical work as a whole. In Ethical Value and Reality Kolnai proposes a 'completion' of phenomenological value-ethics which takes account of 'the embeddedness of ethical values in reality'. Kolnai explores moral psychology and offers important perspectives on political activity in its moral dimensions, on the relation between morality and religion, and on the relation between the moral point of view and the psycho-therapeutic. Dunlop's comprehensive introduction to the translation provides the reader with assistance in understanding the text, setting it in its contemporary context, and relating it to Kolnai's subsequent writings.
