    The Center of the World

Ann Arbor) Howard June (Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of American Culture English Language and Literature and Women's Studies University of Michigan

Regional Writing and the Puzzles of Place-Time is a study of literary regionalism. It focuses on the fiction of the United States and considers the place of the genre in world literature. Regionalism is usually understood to be a literature bound to the local, but this study explores how regional writing shapes ways of imagining not only the neighborhood or the province, but also the nation, and ultimately the world. Its key premise is that thinking aboutplace always entails imagining time. It analyzes how concepts crystallize across disciplines and in everyday discourse and proposes ways of revising American literary history and close readings of particular authors' work. It demonstrates, for example, the importance of the figure of the school-teacher and theone-room schoolhouse in local color and subsequent place-focused writing. Such representations embody the contested relation in modernity between localities and the knowledge they produce, and books that carry metropolitan and cosmopolitan learning. The volume discusses fiction from the nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first centuries, including works by Sui Sin Far/Edith Eaton, Sarah Orne Jewett, Ernest Gaines, Wendell Berry, and Ursula LeGuin as well as romance novels and regionalmysteries.

    Arthur and Esther

    Arthur and Esther

    Ross Howard

In the wake of public spending cuts, Arthur wrestles with the methods set out in Montgomery Swank's 28 Ways to Terminate Your Existence and Questions You May Have, the one book he has salvaged from the closure of his beloved library. This elemental and affecting two-hander explores love, its loss, and the lives we inherit and impose on others. " - full of both outrageous dark comedy and deep sincerity - an ultimately compelling night of theatre" nytheatre.com British playwright Ross Howard is an Edward F. Albee Foundation Fellow. A A History of the Pharaohs 2 Volume Set A History of the Pharaohs

A A History of the Pharaohs 2 Volume Set A History of the Pharaohs

    Arthur E. P. Brome Weigall

The career of Arthur Weigall (1880-1934) encompassed Egyptology but also stage design, film criticism and journalism, as well as fiction and books about ancient Egypt. After studying in Germany, he worked at Abydos with Flinders Petrie, but in 1905 he was unexpectedly promoted to Chief Inspector of Antiquities for Upper Egypt, when Howard Carter was forced to resign. His work in Egypt, especially in the area of Luxor, focused on the conservation of monuments and the prevention of the shipping of artefacts abroad, until 1911, when he returned to London. In the preface to this two-volume work, published in 1925, Weigall likens the writing of a history of Egypt to the piecing together of a jigsaw puzzle consisting of thousands of pieces, but presents a chronological narrative at a level to satisfy both the scholar and the interested amateur. Volume 2 covers the period from the twelfth to the mid-eighteenth dynasty.

Culture and Civility in San Francisco

Culture and Civility in San Francisco

    Howard S. Becker

This unusual analysis of the San Francisco way of life combines articles by ten leading social scientists with a unique 32-page photo essay by Michael Alexander and an introduction by Howard S. Becker to present a sweeping overview of what makes San Francisco unique and why people enjoy it. The essays deal with the nature and style of political decisions and programs, the mystique of the use and abuse of drugs, sex and deviance, and the relationship between blacks, whites and police. These essays point clearly to the single most important factor contributing to the quality of life in San Francisco: a culture of civility. This culture of civility, which pervades the city's social life, comprises a tolerance for other people and other groups among the several factions of its society; a willingness on the part of all to settle for less than everything they want. No.23 in the series. Contents: Introduction (Howard S. Becker). The Culture of Civility(Howard S. Becker and Irving Louis Horowitz). Red Guard on Grant Avenue (Stanford M. Lyman). The Game of Black and White At Hunters Point (Arthur E. Hippler). San Francisco: A Photographic Portfolio (Michael Alexander). The Health of Haight-Aihbury (David E. Smith, John Luce and Ernest A. Dernburg). The Politics of Hyperpluralis (Frederick M. Wirt). Store Front Lawyers in San Francisco (Jerome E. Carlin). The San Francisco Mystique (Fred Davis).

    Revolutions from Grub Street

    Revolutions from Grub Street

University of Worcester) Cox Howard (Professor of International Business History Professor of International Business History, AUT Business School) Mowatt Simon (Associate Professor of Management Associate Professor of Management

Revolutions from Grub Street charts the evolution of Britain's popular magazine industry from its seventeenth century origins through to the modern digital age. Following the reforms engendered by the Glorious Revolution of 1688 the Grub Street area of London, which later transmuted into the cluster of venerable publishing houses centred on Fleet Street, spawned a vibrant culture of commercial writers and small-scale printing houses. Exploiting thecommercial potential offered by improvements to the system of letterpress printing, and allied to a growing demand for popular forms of reading matter, during the course of the eighteenth century one of Britain's pioneering cultural industries began to take meaningful shape. Publishers of penny weeklies and sixpennymonthlies sought to capitalise on the opportunities that magazines, combining lively text with appealing illustrations, offered for the turning of a profit. The technological revolutions of the nineteenth century facilitated the emergence of a host of small and medium-sized printer-publishers whose magazine titles found a willing and growing audience ranging from Britain's semi-literate working classes through to its fashion-conscious ladies. In 1881, the launch of George Newnes' highly innovative Tit-Bits magazine created a publishing sensation, ushering in the era of the modern, million-selling popular weekly. Newnes and his early collaborators Arthur Pearson and Alfred Harmsworth, went on to create a group of competing business enterprises that, during the twentieth century, emerged as colossal publishing houses employing thousands of mainly trade union-regulated workers. In the early 1960s these firms, together withOdhams Press, merged to create the basis of the modern magazine giant IPC. Practically a monopoly producer until the 1980s, IPC was convulsed thereafter by the dual revolutions of globalization and digitization, finding its magazines under commercial attack from all directions. Challenged first by EMAP, Natmags, and Conde Nast, by the 1990s IPC faced competition both from expanding European rivals, such as H. Bauer, and a variety of newly-formed agile domestic competitors who were able to successfully exploit the opportunities presented by desktop publishing and the world wide web. In a narrative spanning over 300 years, Revolutions from Grub Street draws together a wide range of new and existing sources to provide the first comprehensive business history of magazine-making in Britain.

Bomber Command: Battle of Berlin Failed to Return

Bomber Command: Battle of Berlin Failed to Return

Steve Bond, Steve Darlow, Sean Feast, Andy MacDonald, Robert Owen, Nicole Russell, Howard Sandall

'Tonight you are going to the Big City. You will have the opportunity to light a fire in the belly of the enemy that will burn his black heart out.' The message from Commander-in-Chief of RAF Bomber Command Sir Arthur Harris was clear. As the Second World War continued into a fifth year, the airmen of Bomber Command were to fly deep into hostile airspace and bring the war direct to the German Nazi capital Berlin. From the autumn of 1943 to the last days of winter in early 1944, during the hours of extended darkness, the bomber crews braved the flak, the searchlights, enemy night fighters and extremes of weather, to bombard the 'black heart'. Prior to the all-out campaign against the 'Big City' Sir Arthur Harris firmly believed his bomber force could break the German will to wage war, but he also prophesied that 'It will cost us between 400 and 500 aircraft'. Fighting High Publishing brings together acclaimed Bomber Command historians to tell the story of some of the thousands of airmen who failed to return from operations as part of the 1943 and 1944 Bomber Command Battle of Berlin. The authors, utilizing family archives, personal testimony and records, wartime memoirs, diaries and letters, witness recollections, logbooks, and official documents, piece together the remarkable, yet ultimately tragic events surrounding the losses described. Illustrated throughout with previously unpublished black and white and color photographs Bomber Command Battle of Berlin Failed to Return ensures the memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice is kept alive. 'We Will Remember Them'.

King Arthur and Robin Hood on the Radio

    Katherine Barnes Echols

Before stories of King Arthur and Robin Hood were adapted and readapted for film, television and theater, radio scriptwriters looking for material turned to Thomas Malory's Le Morte Darthur (1485) and Howard Pyle's The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood (1883). From the 1930s throughout the mid-1950s, their legends inspired storylines for Abbott and Costello, Popeye, Let's Pretend, Escape, Gunsmoke, The Adventures of Supermanand others. Many of these adaptations reflect the moral and ethical questions of the day, as characters' faced issues of gender relations, divorce, citizenship, fascism, crime and communism in a medieval setting.
