Black for a Day
In 1948, journalist Ray Sprigle traded his whiteness to live as a black man for four weeks. A little over a decade later, John Howard Griffin famously ""became"" black as well, traveling the American South in search of a certain kind of racial understanding. Contemporary history is littered with the surprisingly complex stories of white people passing as black, and here Alisha Gaines constructs a unique genealogy of ""empathetic racial impersonation--white liberals walking in the fantasy of black skin under the alibi of cross-racial empathy. At the end of their experiments in ""blackness,"" Gaines argues, these debatably well-meaning white impersonators arrived at little more than false consciousness. Complicating the histories of black-to-white passing and blackface minstrelsy, Gaines uses an interdisciplinary approach rooted in literary studies, race theory, and cultural studies to reveal these sometimes maddening, and often absurd, experiments of racial impersonation. By examining this history of modern racial impersonation, Gaines shows that there was, and still is, a faulty cultural logic that places enormous faith in the idea that empathy is all that white Americans need to make a significant difference in how to racially navigate our society.

Cambridge Studies in Comparative Politics
Why do governments tolerate the violation of their own laws and regulations? Conventional wisdom is that governments cannot enforce their laws. Forbearance as Redistribution challenges the standard interpretation by showing that politicians choose not to enforce laws to distribute resources and win elections. Alisha Holland demonstrates that this forbearance towards activities such as squatting and street vending is a powerful strategy for attracting the electoral support of poor voters. In many developing countries, state social programs are small or poorly targeted and thus do not offer politicians an effective means to mobilize the poor. In contrast, forbearance constitutes an informal welfare policy around which Holland argues much of urban politics turns. While forbearance offers social support to those failed by their governments, it also perpetuates the same exclusionary welfare policies from which it grows.

When Is High Moon?
Over the years, there has been a secret tradition of after-hours passion projects privately created by talented artists responsible for developing stories and visuals for animated motion pictures. A diverse group of entertainment industry professionals, who work collaboratively in teams during the day, burn the midnight oil pursuing personal artistic goals as a way to hone their skills and broaden their horizons. From time to time, these free-thinking visionaries focus their individual efforts on one mutually agreed upon theme as a method to ignite their imaginations and juxtapose their kaleidoscopic points-of-view. In the past, you might never have had a chance to get a book like this (personal, quirky, independent, and creatively unrestricted) unless you were a studio insider. Now, one of these unofficial, off-the-radar story collections is being quietly offered to collectors by Baby Tattoo Books, and you are invited to partake in this secret society of artistic storytellers and narrative art lovers. From the hearts, minds, and pens of dozens of women and men who work (or have worked) in the Story and Visual Development departments at major animation studios comes an anthology of short stories in graphic novel form that reflects on the question "When Is High Moon?." *** The Storytellers: Alisha Gibson, Allen Ostegar, Andy Harkness, Bill Schwab, Brian Kesinger, Brittney Lee, Camille Andr , Carlos Romero, Carrie Liao, Chris Hubbard, Chris Ure, Dan Abraham, David G. Neo-Passing
African Americans once passed as whites to escape the pains of racism. Today's neo-passing has pushed the old idea of passing in extraordinary new directions. A white author uses an Asian pen name; heterosexuals live "out" as gay; and, irony of ironies, whites try to pass as black. Mollie Godfrey and Vershawn Ashanti Young present essays that explore practices, performances, and texts of neo-passing in our supposedly postracial moment. The authors move from the postracial imagery of Angry Black White Boy and the issues of sexual orientation and race in ZZ Packer's short fiction to the politics of Dave Chappelle's skits as a black President George W. Bush. Together, the works reveal that the questions raised by neo-passing-questions about performing and contesting identity in relation to social norms-remain as relevant today as in the past. Contributors: Derek Adams, Christopher M. Brown, Martha J. Cutter, Marcia Alesan Dawkins, Michele Elam, Alisha Gaines, Jennifer Glaser, Allyson Hobbs, Brandon J. Manning, Loran Marsan, Lara Narcisi, Eden Osucha, Gayle Wald, and Deborah Elizabeth Whaley

The Golden Sword
Camden was destined by birth and tradition to serve the Flame, the supreme power in the kingdom of Branion. But it was not the Flame which called to him—it was the Wind. Drawn to this Aspect yet forced to keep his talent secret, Cam felt alienated from his own family, forbidden to become who he was meant to be. Then his uncle, Celestus, offered Cam a temporary refuge at his own home. And suddenly a world of possibilities opened for Cam. For three of his cousins were also staying with his uncle: Danielle, who felt the call of the Sea; Quinton, whose chosen Aspect was Oaks; and Alisha, daughter of the Branion ruler and vessel of the Flame itself. What at first seemed the most wonderful haven was fated to become something far different. Celestus’ plan for Cam and his cousins’ training was to commit the ultimate heresy. And the Flame Champions would not stand idly by while this Circle of power grew until they could threaten all of Branion....
